IF a fund were to be created I think this would be a fine addition. We say we are a community and as long it takes little more than posting opinions and going cave diving, then we get by fine. But a community is bit more and one bit is taking care of one another's families when a member dies - for any reason. ?

Why not? It's not the family's fault.

Guys, I don't mean this to be self serving, because I am a Life Insurance agent. Seriously, if you love and care about your family, whether you cave dive or not. Get some freakin life insurance. It's NO ONE's responsibility to take care of your family when you are too stupid to provide for them now. Life Insurance costs less than what most people spend on fast food in a month.

Don't tell me you can't afford it. You've got thousands upon thousands of dollars in dive gear. You either care about your families well-being after you're gone, or you don't.

As a good and non self serving Insurance Salesman I suspect you meant to say. Evaluate if you need insurance and then if you do need it get it. Some people have no need to pay to insure the risk and those remaining behind should there be an accident will be financially fine.

    John:

This wasn't directed at the group who didn't need to insure a risk. This was directed at the group of people who would leave behind a financially devastated family. At any rate, I answered "no way" on the poll. It's NOT your job or the rest of the cave diving community's job to take care of my wife/kids should I die in a cave.

Amen. As I said, either sufficient assets or sufficient insurance. My family is MY responsibility, not yours or some shyster lawyer's. I just have to make sure my wife never touches my dive gear. I'm worth way more to her dead than alive.

Well the majority has voted no so for me the topic is over. It wouldnt have been a substitute for life insurance, but a small condolence gift from the cavediving community.

We don't need a fund for that.

Huge mistake, it would make more sense to establish some type of insurance program similar to DAN even if the payout was small (50-100K) because thats a lot more money then the cave diving community could afford to give the relatives of a dead diver.

If such a fund was established it would be more about people trying to make themselves feel better then providing a valuable service to the cave community and thats just selfish.
