Yeah, I was called a cave nazi by MegaCaveExplorer because I told the guy to seek proper training. Apparently telling someone to seek training is akin to leading millions to their death.
It's not the years in your life that matter, but the life in your years.
You can't fix stupid? I found this rather funny. He actually posted it on his website. I personally invited him to take his guide and go show is outstanding video to the park staff and see how cool they thought it was. My guess is he isn't stupid enough to go have himself banned from all parks. I agree the instructor should have his cards pulled. I believe he is the same one I pulled his newly released student who up and decided he was an intro to cave diver which meant guiding OWs on single tanks with a pistol grip single light to the lips at Ginnie was ok. This guy will kill someone sooner or later. He has no business teaching!! Jordon, to answer your question. I would not advise resorting to violence!! The above mentioned incident became heated and it was due to my partners handling of the situation. We both learned that day to handle things in a little calmer fashion. People will be stupid and we can't stop them. All we can do is try to intervene peacefully or sit and watch them die. The real suit yet be heard will be the one where someone could have helped save a life but did not act out of fear of being sued. The best I can say is try to get them out and if they turn hostile then leave. I mean get out of the water into your vehicle with full gear on and speed if you have to in order to not be on site when they are found expired. No witness equals no suit.
Sorry... not "dude", Britton seems to be the mama in the bunch. I guess I paraphrased a little too freely too, she didn't use the Nazi term herself, that all came from her champion "MegaCaveExplorer" in his Youtube comments exchange with James.
Apparently this is a family of three that has given up conventional life in order to sail around and dive. It's this couple and their 14 year old kid. They keep a blog about their adventures-- one of the entries talks about how the woman and her husband are "getting into cave diving"...
Get this quote from the husband's profile entry about himself:"long list of qualifications"...I’ve recently added Advanced Rescue Scuba Diver Training to my long list of qualifications in hope of obtaining my Master Certification in the near future.
I can just see this dream of high adventure ending up with a newspaper story that leaves everyone thinking "that poor kid".
It's sad to see things like this go on. Training is easy to obtain, gear the same way. Unfortunately people like this are a double edged sword. On one hand they make me grateful I have a great mentor and instructor. On the other hand it really grinds my gears that one day, these folks actions could cost us another cave being off limits.
There is no law against sitting back and letting someone die. There is absolutely no responsibility for non emt/police/fire to do a thing. The up side is there is also no chance you'd be charged with kidnapping for removing a body from the cave...win win.
Yet another example of "Problems bound to eventually solve themselves". I love his comment on A Deceptively Easy Way To Die, one week prior:
Maybe he'll just get a good, solid scare and forget about diving forever. We can only hope. This is a great video and one that I hope every diver gets a chance to see before being tempted to enter a cave without training. Thanks!
Edit: Read their blog, at http://www.divingintocruising.com/ . These people seem incredibly gullible and naive.
I have never seen Catfish Hotel, so I don't know if pull and glide is okay there, but here they admit to doing it:
A quote from the blog with a clue as to the possible identity of that instructor:Stopping midway through, Don signaled that the passageway ahead was too dark and we should turn around and head back to Catfish Hotel. Doing this was a little difficult due to fighting the current coming out, but you learn to pull yourself along grabbing hold of rocks and staying out of the hard flowing current.
Any ideas?Being that Don is a highly experienced Cave Diving Instructor, we did venture another 10 feet into the extremely narrow opening to go to the site of the gravestone marking the memory of a diver who lost his life there some years back.
