LEON SINK TRAIL

Just recently I moved to Tallahassee. I've been trying to locate some caves to dive in the area. So I visted leon sink trail and was suprised to find that there were two cavedives within the trail, Hammock and Big Dismal sink. The park provided a map on site of the caves, they all looked extensive and some interconnected. However, they both were atleast topped with some tannic. Does that tannic only top the sinks or is it though and through "poluted maybe"? And what is the access to these sites, does WKPP regulate all of them?

These sinks are highly influenced by rain,drought etc In the past when we had access to the Leon sinks a typical rainy year like this would make the conditions fairly bad,and I called more dives than I made. The surface water is a poor indicator of what the cave would look like,but I am betting with what we have had lately that it is poor throughout. As far as access is concerned,depending who's property you are on,you would need a scientific permit or be part of the WKPP. Sneaking it is not a very good idea because the local sheriff does patrol the area because it becomes a "locals" hangout, plus it is not worth having your gear impounded. My suggestion is enjoy the fact that the Mill pond is only 60 miles away,and hold tight because work is being done to open 2 sites in your area.

I've seen Little Dismal (Hammond) crystal clear from the surface. Sad that it's on federal land. There's not much popularly diveable in Tallahassee, but you're welcome to come diving with us in the major cave systems. We go to Mill Pond a lot.

Little Dismal is in the top 5 U.S. cave dives on my list for shear beauty. The others are Sally Ward, Indian, DiePolder and Sullivan Sink

I'd have to agree with outlawcaver....Little D is spectacular..when you can dive it, and the entrance restriction is not plugged!....I would only add Twin Dees to his "best dive in Fla." list.....a truely challenging cave,(high flow, no flow with zero viz, restrictions, deep passage, huge rooms,...oh yeah, and extremely limited access).... with amazing geology, and TONS of going passage......just logistically very difficult to explore, due to the entrance restriction and high flow, under "normal" aquifer conditions.
