Thread: Line repair

    Default Line repair

I did a dive yesterday where we had to do a fair bit of line repair. The person I was diving with was surprised to learn that I had never been taught how to do it. I've taken four cave classes, from three different agencies and four different instructors, and it was never mentioned. I just wondered how many people got taught how to repair line in their cave training?

I was taught it at intro level and then again at apprentice and full.

I don't recall ever being specifically 'taught it', but I just kind of knew how to do it because of knots and the principals of cave diving. I think I remember being told to 'fix it if it isn't right', but nothing more in depth, that I can recall.

I was taught it. We even practiced getting tangled in line (from a spool), cutting ourselves out, and re-tying the line.

I was taught the principals of how to do it in my class, but I never actually practiced it. I have never had to repair a line in real life ............yet.

I was taught how to repair line. We did a practical drill in the ballroom at Ginnie. The line was run, and while we were in the water and I was down at the gate the line was cut. I discovered the break, and made a repair. This was discussed on the surface beforehand, and I did expect it. The wrinkle was that no only was the line cut, but about three feet of line was removed so I could not stretch it to reach, instead I was forced to add line from my safety spool to bridge the gap.

If I remember this was an extra dive done on remaining gas from a shorter dive in the devil's system. I think the whole dive from start to finish was around 10 minutes. Earlier that day was the entangled diver drill and for that drill I had to run a temporary line around my buddy and then pretend to cut the line entangling the diver since he would not allow himself to be freed form the line (part of the drill).

I was taught in a combined practice of disentanglement & line repair (my instructor used a cavern/ jump reel to simulate).

I was taught and we did land drills that included line repairs.
