    Default Truk Lagoon

First of all, my experience: I'm full cave, don't have my Abe Davis yet but I consider myself a responsible, experienced diver. I'm going to Truk Lagoon in 3 weeks and have been told about swimming through the wrecks. I have been on wreck dives to the Spiegel Grove (lines in) and the Vandenberg (only swim-throughs) but want to see who has experience in Truck or Chuuk.

Do I trust a guide that will swim through a wreck (no) or run lines? I'm not a wreck diver but wouldn't the same principles apply? If I see a hallway I want to run a reel.

If you don't like the idea, then run your own line. Period.

If you can't see light when you enter, then you are doing a "trust me" dive. Personally, I don't do "trust me" dives.

Thank you sir, that's what I was thinking. I just recently read a post on TDS where a diver just wanted to go into one room. One room. If he had been on OC, he would have drowned.

Most of these dives are swim through and none go in and turn around. So do you talk to the guide before you splash? I've never been on that side of the world but I'm diving doubles and can light for all ships. What about the OW divers behind me?

Been there and I ran reels when I was doing anything other than a pilothouse or cargo holds that had some ambient. Beware of the overhead as your bubbles will agitate and send flying old aviation gas which is highly caustic and will cause skin burns. You can choose the dives you want to do and some of the coolest stuff is down in the machinery spaces. Another piece of advice, try to discourage the open water trained divers from following your line. That was the big downside to running lines.

When I was there we dove form the Odessey which is a pretty first rate organization, Any time you want a guide he will go with you( no cost). Also did dives from shore dive shop, not as well organized. Take a good solid light and reel

Had a friend tell a bit of a harrowing story of a guided dive in Truuk where the husband got "disconnected" from the group. The wife still smacks him everytime the story is told...take a reel, their definition of simple route and the guides were quite different.

    9/11....... I remember .........

Thanks for the input, sounds like they will be tolerant of me running a spool. Not like that is their decision! I shouldn't have to ask that question. Due to my cave instructor (Capt Jim Wyatt) I can swim through a hallway without silting everything out.

It's your life, govern your actions accordingly.

Using the same principals that were instilled upon you while cave diving will serve you well in Truck, enjoy your trip
