Default How do you tie off and make a jump

Reading the recent thread about stowing arrows and cookies got me thinking about this question and I didn't want to hijack. I have seen people do it differently both here in Florida and Mexico and wonder what are some of your thoughts.

How do you prefer to tie in and make a jump? Specifically, if it's a marked jump do you:
    1. Tie into one of the "cave's" arrows?
    2. Put one of your personal arrows down slightly further into the cave and tie into your arrow?
    3. Do you just tie into the mainline near the wide end of an arrow (permanent Or your own)? And if so, does your jump line risk "sliding" up and down the line at all?

I've seen all of the above done but wonder if there is thought to why one practice would be generally better than others. Also would your answer change with an unmarked jump (other than the obvious answer of having to throw down a personal arrow)?

I typically prefer my second option. But I use REMs I got from Bill Phillips in Mexico a few years ago. I don't see a need for arrows or cookies anymore. However, I think it would be quicker to throw down my REM and tie into the mainline an inch further into the cave than my REM is located. I can't see a downside other than my tie off sliding until it was blocked by my marker but I think it wouldn't be an issue or very likely to move much at all.

    Thanks in advance.

You left out the most common one in Florida. Most of the popular jumps are marked with double arrows.

    4. Tie in between the double arrows.

That way your line can't slide very far,

I'm lazy, I just tie off in between 2 arrows which mark most jumps in FL. If there isn't a double arrow, I may do my own double arrow if there is no goldline tie-off nearby (if I am off exploring an area).

As I say to all my students, "it depends"... What if the marked jump isn't pointing to your exit? How many in the team? What tie offs are already being used? etc...

Forgot that option. Yup. Surprisingly I don't see that much. I much more frequently see people tying into the deeper arrow itself. Maybe I need to dive more. I'll try that excuse out on the wife.

Usually I use my arrow pointing to the direction I came from and tie in. I get my reel to my line to my arrow pointing to the exit.

I know many people are taught this, but what if it conflicts with "permenant" line arrows pointing to the closest exit?

Good call Kelly! If there is an emergency then everything stays in place and we head to the nearest exit.

One thing that resonated with was the cave diving accident that happened at Madison quite a few years ago. This was the at the same time the half hitch had collapsed and it was very silty. Bottom line a team passing through there stirred up a lot of silt, and thought it had collapsed again, but the one thing that contributed to their demise was there was a line arrow facing the wrong way. Their dive computer was downloaded and they went back and forth between conflicting line arrows, which had them use up valuable time.

Even if you haven't personally confirmed that line?
