Default Speak Up for Silver Springs and Florida's Waters Event Saturday, June 23rd 10 -4

Figured that calling this event out in it's own thread made sense. Cora and I will definitely be there, come show your support!

The Florida Conservation Coalition (FCC) and its partners - Silver Springs Alliance, Silver River Museum, and Marion County Springs Festival - are organizing this event to celebrate our outstanding water resources, to educate the public and policymakers about the significant water quality and supply challenges we are facing, and to advocate for the protection and restoration of Florida’s imperiled waterways.

What: Speak Up for Silver Springs and Florida's Waters
    When: Saturday, June 23rd 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Where: Silver River State Park (1425 N.E. 58th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34470) Click here for a google map and directions.

Governor Bob Graham, Senator Lee Constantine and other Florida leaders will begin speaking at 11:30 a.m.

Spread the word and join the call to protect and restore all of Florida’s rivers, lakes, springs, and aquifers.

Adena Springs Ranch Permit & Silver Springs

Adena Springs Ranch wants a permit to withdraw over 13 million gallons of water a day (MGD) from the aquifer for a cattle and slaughterhouse operation that would be located within the springshed of Silver Springs.

This is more water than the entire city of Ocala uses on a daily basis.
We are already withdrawing water from the aquifer at a rate that is unsustainable. The health of Silver Springs is already in serious decline.

Join us in asking the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) to deny this permit and protect our water resources. Together we can save our aquifer and our springs!

Quite a few folks showed up for the event, saw a couple cave divers but we didn't seem to show up in large numbers.

Bob Knight gave a presentation on the health/sickness of our springs. The room was packed with every seat taken and people standing/on the floors.

There were probably 8 or 10 that I saw. The lectures were great, and several different springs alliance groups as well as other conservation and recreational orgs provided information about the value of, and the threats facing our springs. I do wish the cave orgs would have been able to participate, but cave diving was pretty well represented at some of the booths, and Erics exhibit in the museum is really cool.
