Is this behind the old Jasper High School where the trout farm used to run from?

If it's in the hanging wall side it may be a shale interval in the hartselle fm. That shale can get really crumbly in places, like the east bound lanes of the interstate at Monteagle where they had to quickcrete over the shale part. I've seen a blue/gray shale in thin layers near the sinks at Ranger and Horse Pound falls near Altamont, just before the creeks sink. That's way back on the other side, but close to the same statigraphic interval. "Pure crap clay" sounds like that zone.

IrishSquid- no, I don't think so, well maybe- the high school is a few blocks away, not sure about the trout farm. @heimdall- that is what another caver friend of ours believes as well, but no samples have been taken to confirm.
