The only way to "truly" maintain a continuous guideline to the surface is to run steel cable and lock your reel in place to a bolt on the floor. Even then you have a problem that the line in the cave could get pulled or cut at any moment.

That's why learning the cave and backreferencing are so important.

The temporary-permanant line extension to the eye is a great way to save everyone time, energy and keep the number of lines run through a restriction to a minimum.
