The only way you can truely "maintain a continuous guideline to the surface is to run your own, anything else is a compromise.
The only way to "truly" maintain a continuous guideline to the surface is to run steel cable and lock your reel in place to a bolt on the floor. Even then you have a problem that the line in the cave could get pulled or cut at any moment.

That's why learning the cave and backreferencing are so important.

The temporary-permanant line extension to the eye is a great way to save everyone time, energy and keep the number of lines run through a restriction to a minimum.

Yes you are right, I was never tought that one either

    JDR:

there is a temporary permanent one, just it is not been used. My OW instructor said that Devils is a tourist cave used by tourist cave divers.

Your OW instructor also have a couple hundred dives in the system, so, are you going to listen to a tourist?

Why is it that nobody ever says,"I wish I would have worked more!"?

Actually, considering the reel's intended means of use as a zero viz ability to find one's exit, anyone want to hazard a guess what the result would be if someone actually had to exit the Eye in a lights out / silt / no mask / zero viz scenario through 5 or 6 lines one of which they added themselves...

Anyone having trouble imagining it should take a safety diver or instructor along and try a lights-out air sharing drill through that mess. Though I suppose no instructor would take responsibility for such an insane act.

Meaning that with the temporary-permanent guideline in place every additional line added to that entranceway is useless at best and a hazard at worst. More likely to entangle any exiting team and or result in one or several lines getting cut in order for a team with actual problems to make their exit. Not only adding to the entanglement hazards for every team going through but also reducing the likelihood that each line would be usable in an actual emergency.

Normally I would be against line and reel sharing but "tourist cave" or not I'm thinking line sharing protocol in this particular situation should probably be re-added to the teaching curriculum. It is practically part of the permanent guideline here anyway.

OK, So for the tourist diver, who does not dive devils that often, did not know a temp line was in place on the first dive, does not know who put it there, does not know when it will be removed, and does not know the local protocol, you are suggesting that he should do a "trust me" dive, not run a reel, and just hope that everything will be OK during his exit?

Furthermore, if the entrance is a mess, and lines are everywhere, I agree, dont add to it....Dont do the dive, Its a simple decision.

The chain was extended on the buoy in the Ear (which is covered in tannic water) so it's visible from the decks, so I'd suggest that if the Eye's a mess, an alternative would be to swim around the tarp, drop down the chain on the buoy and enter via the Ear.....

    Safe diving,

    Rich

P.S. When the "temporary guideline" is in place it's usually marked clearly as such by a hand written slate.....I don't know why it wasn't this time and I don't agree with the cookie idea at all!!
