That said, with regards to class and the passing of a team member, try to show class, and if you act like a dork online I'll just not hang out with you at the BBQ's and wont buddy up online. Some folks can't be taught class in these situations, but dont ban them, they will bury themselves socially, but occasionally provide interesting devil's advocate thought.

I'm with this, I don't need Mommy to take care of me, I doubt if any of us do. I believe that social pressure can work.
I thin most of the offensive posts are truly people that are trying to get a rise out of someone, but if most rise up and call them out, I think they will get the point.

I like the feudin'. Too many forums have tried to clean up the act and wound up with few people posting. There may be some that are just trollin', but I think most are seriously upset and can't believe what they've just read - they can't help but post the uncivil remark. and often a few posts later it gets cleared up with apologies all around. One thing I do know is that when I moved here from the North, everyone thought I was "uncivil." We had beer friday on campus up there, we cussed like sailors in ordinary conversation, no one pulled punches ever. In the south I found people prefer to be civil to your face, and use kind words to diss you behind your back. These personality differences appear to be regional - guess I'm saying one person's incivility is another person's civility. To force everyone to be the same is the very definition of extinction.

IMO if you need to be "babysitted" or are too sensitive to be on the receiving end of strong and sometimes even harsh critisizm then IMO don't post on any forum.
I do not think that anyone should be banned unless out rightly, directly and personaly insulting (very very rare)
I Realy enjoy arguing on this forum and have been proven wrong (or not as right as i usually am) a few times over and sometimes harshly, and sometimes even in an uncivil manner so what? When I post an opinion it becomes public and the public should be able to answer and criticize my post openly and as harshly and with a level of uncivilty they deem nesseary without any fear of being banned or censored.

I say if you want civility, stay at home, draw the shades, keep the TV off, and stay off the internet (i'd say dont read the paper, but comeon...no one is anyway). We're all adults...some are douches, but being an adult shouldn't mean we censor the people who are douches...there are plenty on MSNBC. I just change the channel. If your feelings get hurt here, take your sack out of your purse and cowboy up, or change the channel. For those who are douches...you know who you are, you can stick it too.

However, let me say this about our existing moderators... THEY ARE THE BEST. I trust them and don't ever have to stay up late worrying about the forum... I'm just trying to make their job easier and more clear on how to handle the unruly.



Here are some options for them to utilize... just so everyone knows...

1) Moderators to use the BLACK Bar more often to edit out offensive comments... ban the user if they get persistent...

2) Moderators to edit out the whole offending post... they move it to a Deletes log...

3) Moderators to ban the member when they are OBVIOUSLY out of control... for a month or more.

4) Make the offenders new moderators. It's worked before....

5) Create the Moderator Assassins. These 'special agents' will be tasked to kill off the uncivil members. They will get their orders via private PMs from the 'Cave Police'
