Another board has a family member of the cave diver involved at Vortex. They have stated his first name and where he is from. I am not sure if it is OK, or would be deemed inappropriate to post here.

It's not the years in your life that matter, but the life in your years.

    All,
I can confirm that the IUCRR has been asked by the Holmes County Sheriff to render its services to recover a diver lost within the cave system at Vortex Springs yesterday. Further details may be released by the Holmes County Sheriff's Office. Earlier efforts by untrained divers located the victim but were not able to perform a recovery. The members of the IUCRR performing the recovery are on site and no assistance is required at this time. The IUCRR extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Safe diving to all and please be careful. /Ken Hill

This is true. I don't have details to share really (other than it was an open water diver), but I was about to start my dive at Ginnie when I saw the sherrif and tow truck to remove the divers vehicle. Very sad.

My wife and I did a lot of dives at Vortex prior to our full cave training. I was always stunned at the obvious luring of untrained divers into the system at Vortex.
There was a large pull rope and lights leading back into the cave.
Years ago they even had a chamber at 300' divers could come up and breathe old air and chitchat....
The visitors are clueless about the dangers.

That said: death is a terrible sadness.

    Apparently that show is this:

    9:00 pm (ET)

    (60 minutes) Disappeared
    The Vortex
    TV-PG (V), CC

Police believe Ben McDaniel disappeared during a dangerous underwater cave dive. But the best divers in the world search for his body and are convinced that he is not in the cave. Baffled, investigators start questioning the nature of his disappearance.

on the "Disappeared" from the Disovery/Investigation Network....
