I dunno, I have seen some pretty nasty freshwater regs, but nothing that couldn't be cleaned out. I have had to return many neglected salt water regs, because no amount of cleaning would get all the corrosion out enough to even disassemble.

That's the key difference though...if you cant even get it apart, you don't have to mess with it much, so the ick factor is reduced.
