Default Howard McCrea / Squirell Girl

Just before Katrina I worked with Howard to remove this 10'2" sweetie. In March we had been wading in the canal (58 degree water) trying to get him while he was getting a bit of sun. These photo's were in May when this bad boy was out of hibernation.....no wading this time. This was in the middle of the city in a canal that comes from the Fritchie Marsh. He is a great guy to work with.

Lulz, when I saw that link and it said he was from Slidell, I thought to myself that Spd prolly knows him on the first name basis.

Yep I have worked with him a few times over the years. This little guy came in as a 3'er in May. When Howard arrived he was ready to go back to the swamp. His first words were, "I thought they said it was 3 footer" The other pic is the first time I worked with Howard, maybe 1997.

A few years ago my wife Tracy was at work at the sheriff's dept. and a game warden friend came in and said, "Come see what I've got in the truck." She went out expecting some kind of regular Vermont animal, and was surprised to see that he had a 3 foot plus gator! He had taken it away from somebody that he was serving a warrant on for another violation - they had gotten it as a little one and were keeping it as a pet in their house.

I have heard there are gators in the NYC sewers for that very reason.

Al and I have been in the water with alligators on several occasions. Al has ran into two, one on deco and one traversing a swamp to the cave opening. I was in very low vis tannic water one time bouncing on a log, watching my dive buddy do a tie off when the log swam off. We have done deco several times to surface and find gators. My favorite was the time Al was still on deco and the baby gators were surfing on his bubbles. The park rangers told us the won't go deeper than 20 feet. We have seen them up to 55 feet deep on the bottom. I think it depends on the size of the gator and if they are scared or not. We avoid the ones bigger than we are. I always make Al go first when we dive, he's skinny and not as attractive as I am.
