Myakka River State Park - Deep Hole 2012 Expedition

The ADM Foundation, along with Sarasota County, and the Florida State park service has joined teams in an attempt to learn more about this karst feature. Due to logistical considerations and threatening wild life conditions, we are currently using side scan sonar units and ROV cameras. BUT an "alligator cage" is being constructed.

More details when we discover more.

    Thanks for posting this Curt.
If you were a Boy Scout in Bradenton or Sarasota you spent some time camping at Myakka as well as some canoe trips. Although I grew up going to Myakka (as did my mother) I never heard anything about this hole. It sounds like maybe a deep version of Paynes Prairie's Alachua Sink, and with the same guards.

Default Myakka Deep Hole Dive - MAP

On March 21st, Mote Marine’s Jim Culter and I completed the first ever-extensive dive to the bottom of the Myakka River State Parks Deep Hole.

Our goals were to explore the deepest regions and take note of discoveries and conditions.

The “Deep Hole” is a natural sink located in the lower Myakka River preserve. It is the house of over 100 alligators ranging from 3 to 14 feet.

    Editorial and Video to come…………
