The City of Tampa has convinced some in their legislative delegation to introduce legislation that would allow water utilities (public and private) to become owners of what are now "waters of the state" if they treat the water. Our concern is that this will lead to the privatization of a critical and limited public resource: our fresh water. We recognize there is a public benefit associated with the treatment and use of reclaimed water. We do not want to set a dangerous precedent by asserting that our waters can be privatized and used as a commodity. FWF encourages a more holistic look at water policy in the state; one that recognizes the value associated with keeping our water resources in public hands, and not for sale to the highest bidder.
Please call Representative Dana Young at (850) 488-2770 and let her know that HB 639 should be amended to remove the privatization of water provision of her legislation.
