Saved the dive trip

The last trip I made to MX, my dry suit zipper unexpectedly failed. I didn't expect to be able to get it fixed down there, or even to be able to rent one, but it turns out you can't rent a thick wetsuit, either. Danny Riordan lent me his backup suit, and cut his last set of zip seals to fit me to go on it. He joked as he did, "Now I'll blow a seal on my own suit, because these are the last I have." Yup -- you guessed it, about two days later.

I dove the suit for a week. There was, of course, no charge at all.

Divers in general are good folks, but there's a community among cave divers that goes beyond.

I had planned a dive trip and my buddie couldnt make it at the last minute. I had already driven to Cave country so canceling was not an option.

That's nothing... Last time I was in MX this group of Cave2 divers lent me one of their own to do some Cave 1 dives with me... No charge, and when it came to lunch it turned out all the ATM's were out of order so without blinking they gave me some money for lunch and gas as well. Talking about going way beyond !

Cave shops are the only places I've seen that will loan you something you forgot or broke and simply say "Have fun".
Years ago 4 of us went diving and everyone thought the other guy brought a primary reel. We were loaned one without a deposit or a note from my mom.
A couple of years before a first stage blew a seat and Rennaker loaned me one having never seen me before. I took it back after we got through with class and a week later he sent me back my reg repaired at no charge. He would not let me even pay shipping. I make it a point to send people to places like that and spend all the money I can at the cave shops. You will never see an OW shop with a heart that big.
Cave divers for the most part are a big family, of coarse there are a few cousins you never really miss if they aren't there.

When my husband and I owned a shop (mostly recreational open water training) we often loaned regs and other bits to people at no charge if they had a charter blow out and didn't want to miss out on a chance to dive, or had equipment in for service. We also often included extras in their rental gear at no charge, so if they rented regs, BC, tanks, wetsuit, we would include weights, gloves, a light that sort of thing free of charge. We looked at it as good for business because we didn't nickle and dime people. Many of them ended up returning to us for rental and other services even though we didn't provide charters from our shop.

Heck, there were plenty of times I loaned my own personal gear out to students wanting to try the wing and harness setup just to see what it was like compaired to the jacket BCs.

Well, you know, there's, "I've been watching that funky spot for a couple of months but I hadn't been willing to part with the suit long enough to get it fixed," and there's, "There was ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with that zipper when I left the States!" This was one of the latter.

We share that sense of humor. Sort of like saying "He died unexpectedly." I'm pretty sure most people die without expecting it, just like most zippers fail. If you expected it to fail, you would be a real idiot for diving with it.
