    the pack weight wasn't horrible at first... mine was around 35, my wifes at 30 and our 13 yrd old at 18lbs... however he started complaining quickly... the last 1/2 mile of the first day I carried his pack too, then on the second day we took 3/4 of his stuff and divided it up between our two packs... then it got rough... especially being first timers.

    You might should give it a few more chances before you dump the gear, can be rewarding especially in the national park backcountry. First few dives at ginnie i was hitting thirds at the lips, keyhole, park bench etc. but with experience things change for the better. Bill

    SPD shoes work just fine in the mud.

    Did this trip as a kid http://www.hikemasters.com/2011/04/g...p-olympic.html (the grand pass version)... backpacking is not that much fun in Florida. The only thing really interesting to see is water, and there are usually roads to the best of them.

    SPD shoes SUCK as hiking boots.


    Can't beat a good set of flats and some sticky shoes
