    Default Croatia Cave Diving?

I just happened across this thread on the adventure riders message board (off road motorcycle people) in a trip report about some germans riding around eastern europe. They stopped in a place called Plitvice National Park. Check out this pic from his trip: Looks virgin to me. Any croatians or europeans on here that know about this place? and a link to his trip report: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=728916

No, no,..... wait, I see a line, right hand side, over at the edge of that tree! Ha! Kidding aside, my wife's family line comes from Croatia, and she knows that if she mentions "caves" to me, I'll go over and visit with her.

Practice of underwater activities (sporting and recreational diving, underwater filming, underwater competitions and scuba dive instruction) without a permit by the State direction for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage (from here on: State direction) are forbidden.
For the permitted underwater activities a fee has to be paid. Its amount will be determined by the director of the State direction.

I've looked into this before too, it looks like a beautiful place. I'd go there just to see it! To be able to dive there would be amazing.

I´ve been to this place, but that was more than 15 years ago.

There are dry caves, I´ve visited one with great decorations. I don´t know about cavediving at this particular place, but Croatia is "the mother of Karst" and there are a lot of diveable caves.
Access is difficult though, due to permits in generall and especially diving permits.
Besides that most of them are difficult to reach. It would be worth to get there to find out on your own.

When I was in Crotia for 6 months I did alot of ocean diving and at that time it was a fee for a permit that was good for a year. At that time in the late 90s it was a resonable cost(TAX).

As far as I heard this permit isn´t necessary anymore today but this permit wasn´t for cave diving.

Reviving an ancient thread just to provide some info, hope that's ok. As some have mentioned, basically all kinds of diving in freshwater and caves in Croatia is banned unless you have a permit. This holds true also today. The only way to get a permit is through scientific projects, and even that is almost impossible. This has been attempted for several years with no luck, but in 2013 the Project Morpheus was finally granted permission to explore and map caves in the country for a limited time. This summer, an international team of cave divers was gathered in the Knin area to explore and map the springs Vukovica and Glavas close to the Bosnian border. These are two of the 24 springs feeding the river Cetina.

The project is ongoing, and plans for 2014 are in the making. Hopefully in a long term perspective, caves might at some point be accessible for the general public, but don't hold your breath. The Vukovica will for sure never be opened up (as it is a drinking water source), but other caves might hopefully at some point. They are indeed beautiful

Here's a video from the initial Vukovica exploration this summer. We made this as part of the project documentation to the Croatian government (hence the none-cave-diver-information-approach) together with detailed survey, sediment sampling and maps. The project is conducted in cooperation with a scientific community handling all the sample analysis and more.
