    Default Lake Defuniak/Lake Stanley

Does anybody know anything about a possible cave system in Lake Defuniak and Lake Stanley. A local historian was just telling me about a supposed dye trace that was apparently done that showed that the two lakes were somehow connected. Also does anyone know where I might be able to find a bottom profile of Lake Defuniak?

The few people I've spoken with that have dived Defuniak, just found a bottom full of mud.

That is completely believable, but it is a big lake

I was in a "lake" in AL this weekend that was 99% mud bottom, and 1% limestone, and there is a cave there. So who knows, it is possible that everyone missed something.

    Some good clues are:
Is the water temp more or less constant, like a spring?
Is the lake clearer than other lakes in the area?

It is clear, looks like a sinkhole on a topographic map, don't know about the temps, and it is in a known karst area with several springs in the general area. It is totally plausible.

In fact, the town of Defuniak Springs used to be called Lake Defuniak, until several local scientists in the early 1900's (back when Defuniak Springs was big educational center) determined that the "lake" was actually a "spring" and they renamed the town to follow suit

Years ago I searched Lake Defuniak for cave. We scootered the entire lake, and found nothing. Bottom is not solid, I recall sticking my arm in up to my shoulder. Two things to consider:
1)We could have missed something, the visibility is not as clear as it appears from the surface.
2)We found cave and are keeping it a secret.

Serously, there's no cave there from what I saw.

I don't think anyone here would keep a cave there a secret. That's why I asked before I wasted a whole lot of time there, lol

Same experience here- the bottom is not solid, it's very fine, very deep silt. It's actually quite interesting, because some bottom machines wont "read" the silt, and show the bottom being much deeper than it is.
