There is a good reason that aero space uses spherical tanks, most internal volume for the least surface area, but without running the numbers I'd expect a 24" diameter tank to be considerably thicker than a 18" diameter tank, and the gas alone would weigh ~136 lbs (air or nitrox) Add 100-120 lbs of tank you have genuine nugget to hump around.
Multiple smaller vessels with a higher working pressures would allow for cascade filling, with a greater % of the gas volume recoverable at higher pressures. Each vessel is "man portable" too. (At least for short distances)

Back in the stone age, we had several of the 24" spheres mounted in the cascade system at Underwater Designers in Jax. They were a pain in the ass, the surplus ones were lined with some product to help keep helium or hydrogen from escaping, the fittings were odd, and they made funny noises when you filled them, they creaked and cracked.
