    I would also like to see some final pressure numbers for letting them chill in the water for extra time... say 5 minute increments. There will be some point where it's no longer a huge benefit to keep the tanks in the water.

    Maybe we can get a shop to sponsor this test, so we can do a whole bunch of controlled fills. The results could be published on the shops website in exchange.

    LOL... my internet crapped out as this was being sent... I didn't even think it went through... let alone 3x. Sorry about that.

    And who the hell would take a calculated risk like 6351 alloy tanks! It's almost as stupid as diving with all your air plumbed together!

    Not really, and that seems to be the fundamental misunderstanding in the article. Boru was correct when he wrote that "Fast or slow changes nothing related to the temp.slow in water just dissapates the heat quicker, thus reducing stress on the tank . . . ." Both, slow filling and a water bath are effective methods of dissipating the heat generated during a fill. Used together they are a winning combination that avoids overfilling and provides a quality fill. The point is that the heat is always generated during a fill. How we deal with that heat is the real issue.

    Anyone that has passed basic open water knows that water conducts heat 25 times faster than air. As such, a tank filled in a water bath will remain cooler while filling because the water is conducting the heat away from the metal tank. This is particularly important with steel tanks since they do not dissipate heat as rapidly as aluminum. That's why a steel tank will always feel hotter than an aluminum tank after filling. Again, Boru made this point previously by posting the thermal conductivity of both metals.

    The rate of heat dissipation is a function of the Delta T and the area, not material.

    Heat conduction rates will differ by material but conduction includes distance, and aluminum tanks are far thicker (~4 times thicker) than steel tanks. That makes the ~4x conductivity advantage of aluminum vs steel close to a wash.

    What actually matters is the specific heat of the materials.

    Aluminum has roughly 2x the specific heat of steel. That means the same amount of heat will change the temperature of a given mass of aluminum ~1/2 as much as it will the same mass of steel.

    That's *why* steel tanks feel hotter.
