I might start keeping my truck key inside the canister of my light, in the space between the battery and the canister wall. The thieves would probably hurt my feelings worse by taking the spare tanks and stuff that stay in the back of my truck on diving trips than they would by cleaning out my dive gear from the truck and just taking it... From a marital standpoint, replacing the truck would be much less difficult and time consuming...
What I do is lock my keys in my van and have a key copy without the electronics on me that can still unlock the door manually.

Do you know those key safes that real estate agents use? It looks like a very oversize padlock, with a U-shaped bar on the top, like a padlock. But it has an interior compartment that will hold a couple keys. Opens with a combination, like a padlock.
They cost about $40 at a locksmith shop (can't get them at Walmart, sorry).
But I always travel with this lockbox. Find a place on the car to lock it. If you have the loop style door handles, that's perfect. but if not, you might have to find a tow-eye on one of the bumpers.
Put your car keys (including electronic key-fob) in the lockbox, close it and go diving. These lock boxes are as bullet proof at the Master Padlocks, and cannot be broken open without some SERIOUS power tools.

A spare only-the-door key costs $2. I can't for the life of me imagine "hiding" my keys behind my gas door, especially in cave country.
The only problem with "door only" keys is that some cars with electronic key fobs (including mine)
REFUSE to lock their doors if a key fob is inside the car. Probably to prevent dweebs from
locking their keys in the car.
I HAVE to lock my electronic key outside the the car, or the car will refuse to lock.
