Vetting? Good idea. But it's not just about skills and training.
You should probably ask if they are hell bent on killing themselves also.

"Is this thing on?"
From the other side....I often dive with those better, more experienced, than I. When I dive with others, that is. Most of diving is solo for no particular reason other than my schedule rarely matches others'. I've rarely learned much in a direct fashion from these dives, but have seen gear configurations, trim/profiles, buoyancy, etc., that showed me what, but not really how. Questions were answered, but mostly it was/is try this, try that. Two things I clearly remember were critiques. "You move your light too much as you fumble with other things, I couldn't figure out if you were signalling me or what - I finally quit paying attention to you." And in diving my new homemade sidemount rig, "Your wing taco's, you need to secure the bottom edges better." Both were good comments as you can imagine and I pay more attention to smooth light movements, moved it to my left hand which doesn't move around as much since I'm a righty. And I moved the wing from outside the harness to inside and solved the taco problem.
I am hesitant to dive with those better than I for fear of "ruining" their dive. I've been told not to worry, they'd just tell me I couldn't dive with them if it was that important, but heck they don't realize how bad i really am! I'm an air hog - always the first to turn the dive. I am slow, partly on purpose cause I like to really look around and see where we are, where we came from, poke into every little crack and crevice, see the bottom, see the ceiling (and up close because eyesight is so bad), but partly I'm just a slow swimmer. I do not have muscular thighs. I also get foot/toe cramps. Poor TJ2 had to follow me out of cow once while I swam ahead with one fin! The other fin was in my hand! Yes, you can frog kick with one fin - that I know how to do. I could go on, but you get the idea.
So these are the kinds of things I mention when I am being "vetted." And they are the kinds of things I mention when others ask to dive with me (which is rare).

Like Skip, I usually dive with those whom have more experience than myself. Not really by choice, just how it all works out. For the most part I'm just happy to get the chance to dive and most of my trips/buddies are preplanned so I really dont have to hunt down a buddy. If not I just pick a spot that allows solo diving. There are a few divers I've notice around dive sites and other social gatherings where their attitude and confidence far exceed their training level. I'm sure they are great divers, I just dont like jerks nor cocky people. These are the ones I refuse to dive with.
