Confession

I have a confession. I dove JB for the very first time this past week. One dive, not far in, not much time, just a quick look since I was passing through the area. I will be back!

But that's not my confession. I crunched one of the picnic tables. Hit it with the front bumper of my truck when leaving and knocked it over. It's a concrete slab on cement blocks - at least it was. I didn't break the slab or the blocks, just knocked it down. Too heavy for me to pick up and put back together. Tim and Louis, two cave divers from Georgia, were there and the three of us could not pick it up. Maybe a team of six could, but a crane is more likely.

Anyway, It was my fault. I don't want cave divers to get the heat and will pay whatever the park administrators require. Penance? Perhaps they'll make me come back and clean up the grounds (during a sit of course)?

Damage to the truck was light, a few scratches on the bumper and long dent.... I'll probably not have it repaired, but keep it as a memento of my first dive at JB!

backside? summertime? hmmm....let me see. drive through main gate, go left away from water, then turn back toward the water. A new pavilon. lots of tables and grills. little room to actually park. a black plastic tarp staked up to hold back runoff (I guess?). grassy downhill walk to the wooden stairs into the water. At the water, the entrance to the cave is to the right, so I guess it's the back side of the park - looks like a sandy beach on the other side of the water and that appears to also be the main park area. The downed table is at the end of the newish covered pavilon, the end away from the water.

Being new to JB I didn't really know where to park, so just went over to where Tim and Louis were parked. I didn't know Tim and Louis before that day; they just happened to be there at the time. I was solo diving.

That's the new Divers' Pavilion. Mat's talking about where we had to park last year (up the hill), but there's also a new pavilion there.

Edit: On second thought, he might be talking about the other new one.

I'm going to be down there this weekend with a group of 10+. I'll see what we can do if it is not fixed by then.

Actually, that area will be closed to parking this summer, completely. They are expanding the parking lot across the road. However, according to Chuck Hatcher, he is going to try to get part of the new pavilion by the handicapped parking reserved for cave divers along with some parking there.

The only location where there are concrete tables and benches is up the hill. Skip, thanks for the confession, but don't lose sleep over it. Those things have sunk into the ground and fallen apart over the years. The grounds people are there almost every day now. I'll be there later this week and talk to them about it.
