That's micropower technology. Works real well for very low drain things that are a real ##### to replace the batteries in.

I doubt it can be scaled reasonably to produce high-current storage-style energy. It would be prohibitively expensive for the raw reactive material in the quantity required for openers.

Very cool stuff, for its intended application though...... and a real breakthrough.

That's give a new meaning to the 'nuke 'em until they glow' phrase, and if it had a plug for your lighting on the side you could carry some truly AWESOME lights with you at no "additional cost".

I think this would have better use towards things like backup, low power, lights that would never run out of juice.

I'd settle for good old hydrogen fuel cell, which we aren't going to get any time soon in the US for a decent price, cause the oil companies along with the auto manufacturers decided to "fianance" all the fuel cell research in return for the control of public sales, hmmm. BTW triitum is like the rarest substance on earth so it isn't like having a lump of spent fuel rod U235 just burning away, and it got a 1/2 life of something like only 9 years. It is made in reactors ( forms as gas bubbles in reactor fuel), but under the right circumstances (enormous pressure and heat) you can make tritium (http://science.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-bomb.htm), course they do use it in night sites for guns, but a little may go a long way. Anyway fusion is just around the corner and every thing will be nice then. I'll just have to just keep on goign tto the gym and lugging the 80 lbs of batteries for another 75 years or so. I had a hunch this thread would draw Sidlicous out of the shadows. I say we put the auto makers out of business, and of course we should start with Ford. I recall on the back of our lensatic compasses that used Tritium for ilumination that there was a radioactive label, but that had more to do with disposal than exposure risks. Never saw anything attached to any of the gun sights that make use of it, which brings me to ask, just how much of this stuff would you need to make a battrey with the juice to be useful? Seems like it would take more than would be practical to power most items. (I'm in the mood for love too, but glad I am not in TN this morning )

Most gun sites that are called night sites are illuminated with tritium. I believe glock uses em along with several other manufacturers. All it is is a little bit of tritium on the three dots that make up the sites...one in front and two in the rear....it's pretty bright when you walk into your house and it's all dark before you get to the light switch.....all you can see is those three lil devil eyes glowing in the dark. But they work great for lining up your sites in low light situations. You can get em for any kind of weapon really....shotguns, rifles, bows, etc.
