    Default Respect in the cave

There is a double ender clip, clipped off on the main line, about 1,000 feet into the cave by the Maple Leaf at Ginnie. It has been there for about 3 weeks.

I’m guessing someone found this double ender and clipped it on the line thinking whomever lost it might return on another dive and retrieve it. This clip is useful to everyone, has no name attached to it, and yet has been left alone by everyone diving that area in the past 3 weeks. The assumption is, it belongs to someone, and we don’t touch equipment that belongs to others while in the cave. The clip is a visual reminder of the respect we show each other while diving in a cave.

We might flog each other online and even in person, but in the cave, we are utterly respectful to everyone.

    Appreciate the post Dean.

As I read it, I recalled another post about caching tanks and thought about making an off hand post about leaving those "cached" double enders for when they are really needed.

But I decided against it. I think the respect you are referring to is one of the reasons that I enjoy this activity so much.

The action depends on what the item is. Sure, I'd leave a clip on the line where I found it. If it were a computer or a light or something similar, I'd bring it out and leave it with someone for safekeeping so the owner could pick it up later.

OTOH, I have a nightmare of exiting and looking for my deco tank only to find a polite note on a slate: "If you're the one who left an Al 80 and reg here, it's waiting for you at Lost & Found. Have a nice day!"

Thank God the days of rude things like trying to kill people with DPVs and forging certification cards are long gone. Now if we can only fix this pesky MOF=distress mess, all will be well with the world!

I have always told my dive buddies if I should perish while cave diving please take all gear except mask and fins. Please shove a snorkel in my mouth.

That way at least I would have a Guinness World Record Cave dive using only a snorkel, mask and fins.

Also please put my mask on my forehead so other teams will know that I am in distress.

Not sure what the limitations are on items found in caves. After-all, it was this board that found my $400 light and returned it to me. You guys are awesome.

I have never lost anything in a cave and it not been returned to me. I dive JB all the time and and have kids running off with my deco bottle as I am gearing up and other divers are quick to tell them to leave it alone or put it back. I have even enterd the cave and left a spool in the steps only to have another diver give it back to my when we passed eachother on the main line.

I dont think the record counts if your mask is on your forehead.
