Does anyone know what the conditions are at Cathedral ?
I don't know if ayone has been in since, but I was there November 14, and the vis was around 20 feet. I don't think much has changed since to effect the visilibity.
Forrest, can you tell us what the procedure is if you want to dive Cathedral? I understand that you must be a CDS member and have a
Davis award or its equivalent, but do you have to get Mrs. Exley's permission or anything like that?
Forrest,
Tell me about Cathedral, what are some of the features and depths. I would like to dive it someday when I get my 100.
There is a nice big deck going down to the water. A headpool about 25 by 50 feet, usually covered in duckweed. the floor of the headpool slopes down toward the entrance, about 30'. Just inside is a deco chamber. There are several lines going straight down to about 100'. At one time, they were marked for upstream and downstream, but I didn't see any last trip. This is the reason for going with someone that has been there before.
There are two downstream lines. One goes to Falmouth, the other goes to Jewell sink. If there is much current, these could be on-way dives!
The main upstream line has a bunch of clips on it to hang deco bottles. At around 110', you go under the sinkhole wall, and start to level out. The line goes up and down over hills, varying from 130' to nearly 200'. On your first dive, you probably won't get much past 150'. Trimix is recommended. The tunnel is huge, and I have only been able to see both walls a couple of times, when the visibility was very good. It never gets over 50', and last month was only 30'.
I have heard that the line is buried in places upstream. It was the same downstream on my last last trip.
Forrest, I'd like to make a reservation to dive CC with you the next time we're both in cave country.
Whoever said money can't buy love never bought a puppy.
Thanks, it sounds great.
