Nay was my vote in the original debate and still is, I just didnt know how to counter the" if it saves one life its worth it" line. After reading the responses I wonder if pulling all gold lines / all laid lines out of systems would help cave conservation by reducing the number of divers who would never imagine running a line. Or since the average skill level in running a reel sucks maybe the penetrations would not be so far in length. Ya it might be messy with a bunch lines at first but after 500 feet or so it would probally be empty. Not to mention since the majority arent going far , out of gas or lost situations would be next to nill. Ya lets get down to the grit and eradicate main lines. Carry your tanks, run your reels , set your arrows/markers and please bring them all back with you when you exit, amen.

This will of course include the creation of the following fees added to all gear, fill and site admission purchases:

UGS (Universal Gear Surcharge) - Provides subsidies for low income cave divers to purchase gear
UFF (Universal Fill Fund) - so that low income cave divers can get free or reduced cost fills
ICAS (Interstate Cave Access Surcharge) - To keep admission costs low for those cave divers with significant travel costs if they dive out of state

Keep in mind that these are not taxes. These are charges that every advantaged (wealthy) cave diver is happy to pay to provide access to the sport by those less advantaged than themselves.

Something can save one life and yet still be bad if it costs several others. If the complacency/unintended consequences arguments earlier in this thread are correct (and they seem plausible to me), then it may save one life and net cost quite a few others.

It's all good until some genius comes along and dies doing a 500 ft visual jump. Poor line skills can be a learned thing as well, I've seen an instructor allow their student to run atop 2 lines in the cavern zone. sad really.

Thought you said it would just be applied to the wealthy? WTF?

I like the idea of pulling all the lines but thinking of 20 teams laying 20 lines a day through the lips at ginnie or down the chimney at JB makes me want to barf. Longer jumps might be a good idea...
