FW is correct. The site was operated by Lockheed GA, not the military. Similar to the nuclear reactor that used to be housed at GA Tech. It was not run by the military either. That, of course, does not mean Lockheed left a clean site when they packed up and moved out...

I don't recall seeing anything related to the NRC when I visited the site years ago and have not read anything recently regarding the NRC at the site.

Well, entering contaminated water with a rip in your dry suit is a risk that should have been avoided. Tearing one while in the water is another thing that should not happen frequently.
In a non-contaminated support system it may not be a big deal, but it still should not happen.

Dosimetry won't measure contamination or even a hot particle unless it lands on your dosimeter.

And here is a link to guy on a motorcycle adventure riding site. Take some of what he says with a grain of salt, but there are some pics on there.

You will still be diving then!

They do mention some of the regular areas filled with water when they stopped pumping. Those may be available now. Not sure which ones they are though.
Monitoring before 1970 was pretty sad.
Equipment was poor and people did not care. I remember that we had an old reactor vessel from the original Seawolf buried in one of our parking lots at NPTU Ballston Spa! I believe they finally took it out in the early 80s when I was back there as an instructor.

Well, of course it should be avoided, LOL, and we should drive the speed limit. But that's just not reality.
As far as the dosimetry badge goes. I can walk through the power plant, stand in the wrong spot and add millirem. It's distance and time exposed.

    And get thrown out.

Don't be giving the folks the wrong idea. You are talking about 'frequently' tearing your dry suit or 'frequently' not doing the proper inspections before entering contaminated water. And casually walking through the Radiologically Controlled Area and standing in the wrong spot and getting unwarranted dose. (which for everyones information you can't get in there without lot's of controls and it is only a smaller subsection of the entire plant. And if you have a remote chance of any dose above negligible Big Brother is monitoring your dose remotely and/or with a personal technician to tell your dumb ass to move)

On any of the 5 sites and 8 reactors we own or the other sites I have been to, someone who does those things will not be coming back.
