I got a Dive Rite 24w HID recently, and then got a video reflector for it. I've been wanting to try my little Canon point-and-shoot (in the Canon housing) in video mode in a cave, but the tide tables keep bringing me back to salt water. (There's a finite number of good weekends during the year, so we take them when we get them. I've made a total of four cave dives since the workshop weekend.)

I did not use the canon housing, but I did use a canon point and shoot with a Salvo 35W w/ Video Reflector and it came out pretty good. Now that I've got a big HD housing, I don't do any video all that much!

What Canon model are you using, Sludge? I have the G9 with the Iklite enclosure. I have been disapointed with the shutter lag and dependability of this camera but I keep getting it repaired because of the investment in the enclosure.

What Canon model are you using, Sludge?

It's a PowerShot SD630 with a WP-DC3 housing. I got them off eBay last year for two hundred bucks. I was amazed at the quality of the video mode - look at the video "Ginnie pulling rollerblader" on my Facebook page.

Jack Gregory had one in the water yesterday at ginnie and filmed a dive so he may be able to comment about the focus issue after he inspects that video. A nice compact 1080p hd cam....they do time lapse as well. The issue is definitely light in the cave. Bill

Hi Bill: I have finally been able to review the video that I shot on 7/14 on our dive to EOL at Sweet Surprise (with you, Jeffie, and me). I used the R-2 wide angle @ 720p and SPT rather than CNT. All other settings were Factory Default. The SD Card is a SanDisk Extreme (30 MB/s and 8GB). I mounted it (the Hero HD, w/stock housing) on my helmet and left it on from the start of the dive until we turned. I was number 3 in line so most of what I shot was of your taxpaying rip-off, worthless Communist ass using that new Death Box of yours. When you review the video on a non-HD laptop, it looks OK and there does not appear to be a focus issue with the housing. BUT, when I transferred the .MP4 container file to my full HD system @ the House and played the file at its intended resolution, you can clearly see focus issues. So I went and ordered-up that modified housing from those nut jobs @ Sartek. The light issue was not that big of a deal. As you know, I used my Salvo 21 watt HID primary adjusted out all the way, a second LED on my left hand (700 series LED from Dive Rite), a 10 watt HID (Nightrider) mounted on the scooter, and two of the Intova Nova Wide Angles mounted on each side of my Helmet. The lighting worked great in the smaller areas of the cave (Lips, Cornflakes, Roller Coaster, and the SS tunnel. But when we went into the wider and darker portions of the main tunnel from the top of the RC to SS all the light was just "soaked-up" and it was much harder to see things. As soon as I get a chance, I will edit down a short copy and post it on the Forum and I'll also put a unedited one on my FTP site so you can grab it. Unless you have an HDCP compatible Video Card in your system and HD Monitor, you will not be able to see the finer focus issues that the others have been talking about. Hang in.
