Default Florida Cave Diver's Mom rescued from Alabama Cave by Missouri, Tennessee cavers

    Tumbling Rock Cave, Alabama
    19 June 2010

A single, weak yellow light poked out of the darkness, high up on a debris pile in Tumbling Rock Cave, in Northern Alabama. Stoic in the darkness, a faint voice assured us that she would be alright, and that she was just waiting for her "friends" who had continued on further into the cave.

This was the scene last Saturday, as two Tennessee cavers and three Missouri cavers intent on exploring the difficult cave happened upon the elderly woman in the far reaches of the underground labyrinth. Taking the woman at her word, the cavers continued into the cave, after making sure that she had warm clothes, food and water for her long wait. Not soon after, the group happened onto another caver leading a tour consisting of three young ladies of undetermined origin. It soon became apparent that this new group had shed their weakest link and continued onward, intent on exploring the furthest reaches of the cave.

Curiously enough, it turns out that certain members of the Tennessee/Missouri group had previously been Florida Cave Divers, and after some discussion recognized the leader of the new group to be Michael Poucher of Ocala, Florida. Though he did mention that they had left a member of their party further back, he failed to mention that the woman they had left behind was indeed his mother, information which the woman later volunteered.

Both parties continued into the cave, but the Tennessee/Missouri party, concerned for the well-being of Michael Poucher's mother, (and having reached the King's Shower, our goal for the day) quickly turned back towards where the woman was waiting, eager to leave the cold, claustrophobic confines of the cavern.

Mrs. Poucher eagerly agreed to join us in our return to the surface, where she would not have to wait another hour in the dark, thinking about the movie "The Descent," and wishing she had warmer clothes to put on.

    The moral of this story:

Don't leave your mom in a cave. We'll find her. And We'll take her out.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHA

I'm with Mike on this one... drop the weakest ones ASAP and push forward... even if it's your mom...

Who visits Tumbling Rock more than once?!

I've been to the end of that cave.... and will never go back. Those 3 young ladies must have been something else!
