I suspect that the halocline was more mixed and turbulent than most and I certainly hope that they're not all like that!

So was it a too expensive and not enough being purchased scenario that made them disappear from the shelves?
They are all like that. The trick is to get above them, using good anti-silting technique. Luckily, they settle out pretty quickly, so is isn't messed up to much on the way back out.

The "pin gauges" were replaced by the dial type SPG, in the 60s.

What i would like is for the pressure gauge to have bumps, about 7, coming from the center outward on the top part of the gauge above the glass dial. As the pressure drops so do the tactile bumps on the top of the gauge..until you have one lonely bump in the middle..indicating you had under 500 psi.

I'd also like a rebreather with the case filled with pressurized o2 so i could sidemount the breather on one side and the diluent on the other...but that'll probably take quite some time to organize.

You realize there are sidemount rebreathers out there right?

yes, however i'd like the case that holds the scrubber and head to be hollow and hold pressurized o2..include a co2 monitor, computers that monitor heart rate and a system that can be totally recovered from a complete unit flood. I'd want the entire system tested by third parties and i'd like it to be under 8k.
I'm thinking it'll take about ten years from now for all of it.

We are getting pretty far off topic, but there is a rebreather much like you describe. It has a round O2 tank that sits under the scrubber. http://www.smrebreathers.com/index.htm
Or you can make your own a lot cheaper. If you don't aready have it, I can give you access to the DIY rebreather forum.
