    Default Hogarthian configuration question

    Hey everyone,

i have been reading up on the hogarthian gear configuration and, unless i am misunderstanding something, it seems as though the setup calls for your bc/wing inflator to come off of the right post and your drysuit inflator to come off of the left. this would appear to create a setup in which these two lp hoses are crossing over one another behind your head. is this right, and if so could someone explain to me the rationale behind this? if you could also include a detailed description of exactly what hoses/equipment are connected to which post it would be much appreciated.

    tanks,

    rob f.

Here's basically how to remember it-

#1 - Your left post can roll off (the right goes the opposite direction), so your long hose must be on the right hand side. This is because you always want to have the diver receiving air from your long hose on the post that cannot roll off. Yours can, but you can turn it back on, no big deal...
#2 - Since your long hose is on the right, the backup has to go on the left.
#3 - Since your SPG clips to the waist, it has to go on the opposite side of the long hose, so it goes off the left.
#4 - You never want BOTH inflation sources on the same post. This will cause you to lose all buoyancy control if you lose 1 reg. Typically the left side is used for drysuit and right side for the wing. This is so if you're donating gas and have a roll off, you can still breathe off the wing's power inflation (I can't see this EVER happening, but I guess it's a slight advantage in a hypothetical sense).

Left Post - SPG, Drysuit, backup reg
Right Post - 7ft hose & wing power inflation

Here's a pic, hopefully it helps-

For gear questions, I've heard lots of good things about "Dress For Success" written by Dan MacKay. Might be worth picking up. That and JJ's Fundamentals of Better diving books are both good reads for someone starting (at least they were to me), can be found on scubaboard and tds semi often used, and they're easy to sell once you're done. Anyways, I hope I was helpful...

Maybe this is DIR,because at one time Trey used to talk about it,but it isn't Hogarthian.

When I dive backmount, right side supplies suit, left supplies my wing. Since the wing inflation is on my left, so is the supply. What is on the left is supplied by the left...makes my life simpilier.

I think this is a conspiracy by the CDS board.......

Walter, I am diving the same setup when diving backmount.......

If I do manage to roll off my left post, my first indication would be loss of gas to the wing during buoyancy adjustments.......something I do quite more frequently during a dive than going to the backup reg.......

During a routine dive, which piece of equipment do you use more often, the inflator or the reg on the necklace? The inflator of course. If you experience a roll off, the lack of inflation would indicate this much earlier, and without near the stress, of waiting until in an OOG, to find out that your backup reg has no gas supply.

This is the reason I supply the inflator from the left post.

Edit: tj was posting this at the same time.

X4 for inflator on the left post, for the same reasons. I haven't done backmount in several years, but that was the way I always did it.

I had my backmount setup the same way. My first time experiencing a roll off, I did notice it. At first I did not realize what was going on. I stopped the team and TRIED to say "my inflator doesn't work". They gave me a look like "so?" (at the end of the dive, we clarified that look at "WTF is he saying?"). So I say "OK" and just used my drysuit inflation. About 5 kicks later the light bulb went off and I opened the post.

    Cheers,
    Jeff
