Navigating in cave country

I'm setting up a new GPS for getting around cave country but having trouble finding some addresses.

Anyone have a street address for either Peacock or Little River State Parks? Any nearby business address would work.

My Garmin never heard of Luraville.

You can get GPS coordinates off of Walter's site, www.tampadiving.com . Not sure about addresses... most caves don't have addresses.

My experience with trying to use a Garmin GPS with coordinates was too good. The routing the Garmin uses needs addresses to properly pick the correct roads. With GPS coordinates it doesn't understand how to get you there and you can wind up in some strange places.

Just for fun one day, we followed it's directions to Peacock. We wound up on some very small roads. It was trying to bring us in the back way. If we hadn't already had an idea of where we were at, I don't know that we ever would have found it.

I'm pretty sure I was hearing banjos playing at one point.

Same thing with my Magellan Roadmate. I was doing Lake City to Peacock, and ended up on some unpaved roads in the middle of someone's farmland. There were street signs, but still.....

In general, I've found that if the streets are unpaved, it's very likely that they'll not be recognized by my GPS. Quite a few around Ginnie are like that (ie. the "back" way from Ginnie to FL-47 etc.).

me too! Winding around sandy ruts in the woods, no clue where I was, but tomtom assuring me to "turn right ahead" and after twice the time it should have taken, I came to a t-intersection. on the corner was a big mailbox that said, "Peacock Springs." There was a big house back in the trees. I guess that's where they get the mail!

Offtopic but ... unfortunately most Florida caves have addresses, fences, and gates that seldom open

Walter if I remember correctly had Google kml file somewhere, you just need to use software to upload it to GPS. I used GPSBabel++.

My Garmin knows where Luraville is. It's the cheapest model they sell. It is handy in some ways, but it doesn't replace the DeLorme Florida Atlas & Gazetteer that I rely on, and it's certainly no substitute for local knowledge.

Both in Florida and in Vermont it has given us some interesting results. In Florida, it put us on a goat path with huge ruts that I was worried about getting through even with four wheel drive. It tries to send you by the shortest route - even if the "shortest" route is one mudhole after another, and the paved route is only a hundred yards longer.

I bought it just before leaving for Florida in early February, and immediately learned not to trust it. I turned it on when going down to the village to pick up the mail and it tried to send me over the mountain on a jeep road that's not plowed in winter and is used as a snowmobile trail.
