    Default Mexico Budget Trip

Hey, I am trying to plan a trip to dive some of the caves in Mexico. Could anyone recommend a (safe) cave guide and lodging that would not break the bank. The cheapest I could find was Steve Gerrard and Cave Heaven. Thanks.

There are a couple of guides on here. If nobody answers in a day or so, I will move this to the travel advisor forum.

I used Etienne (His screen name is Attchoum) as a guide when I was down a few months ago and would dive with him again without hesitation. As for lodging I stayed at an AI resort in Cancun, so I can't help you there.

I'll throw in my two cents...

Ela and Adam at Cave Heaven are people that I consider good friends now (so I'm admitting a bias) but we started out as student/instructor and I was truly impressed by their philosophy and they are just good people.

They are starting to build a new dive shop/motel across from the marketplace in Tulum (on the Coba road) to the West of main street a few hundred feet.

Let us know how it works out for you!

Are you going alone? There's a condo owner in Akumal who's renting a 2 bdrm condo right now for $80 a night -- he put a post about it on ScubaBoard. I've seen the pictures and the place looks quite nice. Split that a couple of ways, and it gets REALLY inexpensive.

I'd second the recommendation for Dennis or Natalie (although which is easier on the eyes may depend a little on your point of view ). I did Full Cave with Dennis, but I've known him much longer than that, and my husband has done guiding days with him and enjoyed them enormously. I have met, but haven't dived with Adam and Ela, and they're working hard to build their business. Another person you could contact is German Yanez of Yucatech. He lives on Cozumel but does classes and guiding on the mainland, and he is also an extremely nice man and a very experienced cave diver and explorer. I don't know his current fees for guiding.

Bil Phillips has a very nice lodging setup in Tulum, but I don't know what he charges.

+1 for Ela and Adam at Cave Heaven. I did my cave course with them in December and my son had a couple of really enjoyable cavern dives with Ela. I plan on diving with them again.

Bil's rooms are $70 or $80 (+4% for maid service), they are air conditioned and include high speed internet, and easy walking to downtown Tulum for dinner and a cold beer.

Guiding is $210/day for a single diver and includes tanks, air, and transport to sites.

IMO a good deal since you can get away without a rental car
