I ask in good faith, as security is a concern and one thing which has me a little apprehensive of Mexico hotels/dive sites.... certainly something I'd like to rid myself of soon as I eventually want to dive them...
There are thieves among every group/class/type of people. They are the exception, not the rule, so don't let a few bad folks taint your image of an entire group. I found the local staff where we stayed and where we dived to be very industrious, hard-working, and honest. Common sense says not to provide easy opportunities for someone to rip you off, of course, but don't fear a trip to another country just based on the fact that there are some criminals there. Heck, if that were the case, no one would EVER visit Orlando, cuz we sure have PLENTY of crime here.

Go to Mexico, enjoy it! I have only two regrets of my visit...1) That I didn't go sooner 2) That I didn't stay longer

Shirley you're not serious? No, I'm not, but do stop calling me Shirley.

Many thanks! I'm actually not that concerned. Apologies if I misled. As someone who has traveled extensively world wide (witness my travel website), and a 20+ year veteran of the NYC subway system , I've learned to be extremely careful as I'd be "in any major city." My "slightly elevated" concern about Mexico (as well as other places - Rio De Janeiro, Bonarie etc.) is a function of the frequency of crime/theft reports I've read (compared to other resort places), as well as reports of issues with authorities etc. in dealing with theft/corruption etc. Maybe that is an "unfounded concern," and if so, I just need a bit of time to deal with it, as I did for some places considered even worse....

But trust me, when I'm ready to go, I'll get over it! I just have to do my homework/risk analysis in advance and do the best to minimize that risk, as I'd do anywhere. And wherever I've traveled for diving, I've always felt at ease with the diving community in those places. They all tend to look out for each other where others might not.

So, I'll get there.... It will just take some time.
