Default Map of Cave/Mine Dives in US

Has anyone ever put together a map of cave or mine dives in the United States? It would be nice to plan some trips out of Michigan to other dive sites. Maybe a Google Map with Points of Interests, Dive Shops, Fill Stations, Motels, Grotto Contacts, etc.

    Stay safe.

    Mean... just downright mean...

My friend just returned to Michigan from a vacation in Northern Florida. While he was gone we had 60+ degree days with sunshine and blue skies... He had cold windblown sand and couldn't even get into the pool.

    If only we had caves...

I know that Rich Dreher, NACD Instructor Director and Safety Officer had once mentioned the need to build a database of all of the North America caves and mines. I don't know if the project ever went anywhere. It's a good question for Rich.

With enough hands, from all different parts of the country, the work should be manageable.

There are some small caves in WI. There are some nice caves in MO. I will give you access to the Ozark forum. There is a list of Grottos on the caves.org website. The NSS doesn't publish cave locations. FL is about the only place that does, and that is only cave dives.

There are also a fair number of very old hard rock zinc mines in southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas that nobody talks about and that have had little or no dive traffic. Many are on private property. I contacted the mayor of one small town to discuss the mines. He said, "I have one on my property. The main drift is located about 20 feet down in a water filled pit. I see the main drift every summer when the water level lowers. Why don't you come down and dive it, find out what is in it, and we'll do a town newspaper article as everyone down here is curious what's in them."

As a boy I used to explore old coal mine shafts in Southwest PA. Most were water filled to the knees/thighs at the topmost level and all had garage door size openings to get into them. The lower levels must be completely submerged with the depths unknown.

I think there are a lot of these types of overheads out there known only to those with local knowledge. Some more dangerous than others. Some as stable as the Florida spring systems and just as divable.

I'd volunteer to help build the database if one of the organizations will sponsor it.

What a great idea, a site that would list caves. People could put in new sites, update conditions and get general information of the area. Someone should make a site like that.

    www.caveatlas.com

Ok, sorry for the smarta$$ remark. Walter is allways looking for more sites to add. If you have any suggestions for other things - web site mods, data on each site, rating system, ect.. let him know. He loves to tweak it.
