HOMOSASSA, Fla. - The Citrus County Sheriff's Office says their dive team has recovered the body of a 21-year-old man who went missing while cave diving near the Chassahowitzka River Campground.

Deputies say Joseph Michael Kelly, of Vero Beach, was free diving with 2 friends in an underwater cave around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when he failed to come to the surface. His body was found two hours later in 8 feet of water.

The other two divers are safe, deputies said. Kelly's family was quickly notified of the situation after authorities were called.

Kelly is a student at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

The Sheriff's Office said Kelly's body was to be taken to the medical examiner's office in Leesburg for an autopsy.

Not clear why this is not a cave diving death ? Appears the diver entered a cave with insufficient gas reserves. Really not trying to be funny here, but that's what it seems like. If Abe Davis had died doing his free cavediving, it would have been for the same reason...

I guess technically you are right. Or it could be a cavern death? Regardless of how we classify it, it is a sad and needless loss. My condolences to the family, friends, and recovery team.

Insufficient gas reserves, no line, no backup lights...and insufficient amount of gas to begin a dive.

I think at some point, you need to draw the line on what is a cave diving death.
