Cenote Water Study

As a follow-up to our recent research on Florida caves, a few of us from the Dept of Geological Sciences at the University of Florida are heading to the Playa del Carmen area in mid-March for a week of water sampling (probably the second week). I'm the only cave diver in the group. The purpose of the study is to better understand how the caves in the area formed and why they are different than caves in Florida. The two main sites we would like to sample are Angelita and Ponderosa - but we may be open to other, similar-type sites. If anyone in the area is interested in helping with water sampling or providing logistical advice - please email me at gulley.jason (at) ufl.edu.

Oh, too bad about the timing! There's going to be a TON of us down there in early April, and I'm quite sure you could talk some folks into helping with some sampling then.

We were with a woman from Berkley who will be back in the area in August. What kind of water sampling are you doing? TN, TP, Nitrates, etc. Who is testing your samples?

I'm testing for Dissolved oxygen, organic matter, sulfide and major ions.... The study is primarily focused on understanding processes of cave formation, so we're not collecting nutrients (there is no budget for those analyses). We'll be running samples in our lab at the University of Florida.

Will the DO still be readable by the time you get the samples back to the lab?

Some things are measured on site or actually in the cave using handheld meters. DO, pH (acidity), temperature, electrical conductivity, etc. There are other analyses that are time sensitive - those usually get done in a hotel room the day of collection. Everything else can be preserved an analyzed later back at the lab.

Jason, Looks like i will be in Hawaii then presenting a paper on the tropical storm fay data at ginnie at the aaus meeting. probably would have been more interesting in Mexico, oh well. Have 4 datasondes now (2 hydrolabs and 2 ysis) all with DO and Ph probes. Bill
