    Default Glass at Madison Blue

I've noticed that there is more and more broken glass at Madison. I was wondering if I placed a weighted 5 Gallon bucket in the basin with a lid on top if anyone would get upset. I figure as us divers are doing deco hanging around and we see it may we could pick up a piece or 2 and place it in the bucket. Then after a while one of us could take the bucket out and dump it in the trash can.

Its a good idea. I normally pick up pieces when I am there and it is always a pita getting it out of the water as it is not exactly my favorite thing to put in a dry suit pocket.

A bucket would proivide a handy central collection point. I am not sure a lid would be needed and if so you'd need to make provisions to keep it from getting separated from the bucket. Cutting either a small hole in the lid or cutting what amounts to a flap in the lid to eliminate the need to take the lid off to put glass in it may work better.

Ask the ranger about it next time you are there. Be sure to put a waterproof sign on it, so divers know what it is for.

Great idea. A friend made a couple of these for picking up glass during clean-up dives. Didn't leave them in the water, just carried them during the dive. His design was:

    -5 gallon plastic bucket
-two bricks in the bottom for weight
-drill a few 3/8" or so holes in the bottom so that it will drain when you set it on shore
-cut a 3" hole in the lid
-drill a hole through the edge of the lid and lip of the bucket and connect the lid & bucket with a zip tie, so that they'll stay together when you unsnap the lid.

One that was meant to stay in the water might need more weight, or to be tied to something so that it won't swim away.

This is a great idea, and I communicate with the park manager that covers Madison, and see about getting permission. One thing that the state likes is the aesthetic, and true glass is an eyesore, but if the bucket can be stashed under the platform, that would go over good.

Under the platform is a good idea - it would not be an eyesore and yet would be at a convenient depth. 5 minutes with a couple cans of suitable colored paint would also camoflage the otherwise white bucket nicely and marine growth will eventually give it a very natural color.

Buckets made It will be tagged with a red top. I'll let the Ranger know what it's for. I'll be up there this Friday (looking for someone to dive with Hint-Hint) I'll place it in then. I'll anchor it with a piece of rope to something. Somewhere easy to find but out of the way.
