Why should I want to sign your petition?

It's a CDS award you're talking about. If you want a CDS award you should also be willing to belong to the group that provides the award. If the CDS provides awards they should require membership to recieve them. If it's not worth it to you to join the CDS then any award they provide shouldn't be worth it to you either.

Seems like plain old common sense to me.

To what end is this award beneficial to a non-CDS member?

NSS CDS owned sites that require 100 safe cave dives, also require NSS CDS membership, so there is no benefit at that end.

Are there any other sites that require proof of 100 safe cave dives in the form of an Abe Davis award, that don't recognize the NACD Bronze Wakulla Award?



Show me the benefit of this award, and I'll happily sign the petition. I don't consider another card or certificate a benefit...

How do they swap awards? I'll have my NACD bronze wakulla in around 1/2 the time it will take me to get the nss-cds award. Not sure the two are equal.

From what I understand, you can do 100 short dives and get your nss-cds award, or go the NACD route and do 50 or fewer dives of 2+ hours bottom time.

Mat, the benefit is you get a little sticker for your cave card that allows you into those sites rather than having to pull out your log book and have it reviewed. My log book stays at home. And I really don't want to stand there waiting for someone to count my last 100 cave dives...

As for the petition...not signing it. Now I would support the CDS charging non-members a processing fee to apply for it...say $44...

Way back when I got my Abe Davis the requirement was 100 cave dives after full cave with a minimum of 45 minutes bottom time for each dive excluding deco but with a minimum of 100 hours total bottom time. I'm not really sure of the current requirements because they may have changed.

Ok - since we seem to have some BoD representation at least dropping in the thread....

I find the minutes being posted online to be of little benefit....

Finding out a vote outcome does little to help me understand the nuances of the discussion and the various aspects under consideration... Seeing the outcome gives me little insight in either the discussion or the ideas brought to the table on the various issues and what exactly is going through the minds of the board, our representatives... I understand that recording or dictating a transcript is flat out unwieldy...

For complex issues or split decisions perhaps something like the supreme court, a paragraph for both the decision and dissenting opinion... I don't have the luxury of having personal relationships w/ many on the BoD, or living close enough to cave country to sit in person, and this type of feedback into their rationale would go a long way in eliminating all this "Oh look what the BoD did this time" conspiracy theory nonsense....

I did not mean to leave out international organizations. Sometimes i am a bit america-centric I guess! Not sure if I'd want to join those, but if they'd have me, maybe I'd contribute to them too (oh boy, more places to send money).

Netmage, I was at one meeting in which a BoD member "attended" via Skype, an online real-time free conference software. Skype can also archive the proceedings (both audio and video) and thus be available anytime anyone with the password wants to review it. Might be a fun thing for the BoD to try - indeed, if they set it up at the meeting, all members with a Skype account (and it's a free account) could then attend the meeting and even offer input (video or audio or both). The BoD could even "offline" anyone who proved disrupting.
