Finger spools

I know this is a dumb question but I will ask it anyway, how do you attach the double ender to a finger spool with an oring so that it cannot come off? I read something about that and the oring will be broken off if used but I cannot really figure out the way.

One end usually goes around the loop at the end of the line and the other thru one of the holes found around the edge of the spool (either side of the spool, but normally so that it lays on top of the line). Some divers will paint the end of the line, at the loop, so that they can see it (so that it contrasts against the rest of the line).

Why do you want the double ender attached to the spool with an oring? I've never seen it done this way.

I have balls on the end of my spool line just like on my reel line. Clip a double ender around the line, it will slide until it hits the ball, then I clip it on the nearest hole, and put the other end on whatever d ring I choose. You could replace the ball on the end of the line with an oring, and clip the double ender through the oring...but why?

"I don't know why,but I see spools fall off gear frequently and land on the cave floor,and I think it is related to the double ended bolt snap. Once I saw a guys spool fall off and he was trailing 50' of line behind him and he was never aware. If I am wearing a drysuit with bigger pockets then I will put a spool there,but rarely do I ever stow one on a d-ring. There is a way of securing the bolt snap with an 0-ring so it never falls,but that means having to break the 0-ring each time you want to use it. Unfortunately Murphy's law won't allow it to fall off when you are playing with and want to see if that will occur,it will happen during a dive,or worse yet when you need it for a lost line search."

I read this thread and the method seems interesting, I just cannot figure out how it works.
I use snoopy loops to secure all the safety reel line in addition to a double ender snap, but it would be way faster to break an oring to deploy in an emergency than taking off a loop.

But do you really want to leave broken O-rings all over a cave. Its not a big deal until everyone starts doing it and then O-ring fragments will be everywhere.

Not saying there already isn't trash in the cave systems but I'm thinking its not a good idea to add to it.

I have never had problems with snaps coming off spools except when I put them in my pockets. I dive with dry gloves so you dont always notice everything that happens in a pocket. Now I clip spools off to the butt D-ring or to the dive rite pocket which is clipped to my butt d-ring.

I just clip mine to the loop in the end of the spool line. There are 2 ways to clip it (from the inside or the outside) and 5 minutes of playing with it will demonstrate the "wrong" way where it is fairly easy for the double ender to open if pushed up against the spool. Clip it the other direction from that and you are good to go.

Also pre-dive, I will run the end of the loop through a hole so that is leaves about 1/4" to 3/8" of the loop exposed outside the spool and clip the double ender to that. That way there nothing to wedge the double ender against and it is much less likely to become unclipped. In the cave, it is a PITA to reclip that way so I'll just clip it normally to the end of the line and through a hole in the spool.

Beyond that, if a spool is in a pocket it is not going to come loose and if it does come unclipped in a pocket, it is not going to unspool - so keep it in a pocket on your dry suit.
