Default Cave Diving History web site

    Hi everyone,

A group of us have taken the time to create www.cavedivinghistory.com We were able to use the 424 entries in the history chapter of Cave Diving Articles and Opinions edited by Jill Heinerth and Bill Oigarden as the initial posts.

The original team of moderators are; Kelly Jessop, Forrest Wilson (FW), Russell Edge (Slüdge) and Bill Oigarden. Russell will also serve as the main admin contact. We are looking for anyone else who would like to volunteer to be a moderator or to help in any way. If someone would like to spruce up the main page with some photos that would be welcome.

I hope we all enjoy this experience.

    CDH team.

GREAT idea and i see a lot of work has already gone into the site.A VERY important endeavor IMHO and many will gain essential knowledge.

Is it okay to add posts?? and if so- do you need bibliographic reference or is some word of mouth okay?

If -in time ,the entire worlds history of cave diving is compiled-the data would be priceless and fascinating.

The work you see is the time line Bill Oigarden and myself developed for the book "Cave Diving Articles and Opinions". Please post items, and a source would be great, even if anecdotal from a conversation.

Very impressive! Lots of great information already there. Almost as impressive as the amount of work already done is the fact that it went on line on the projected date! I wish all (OK, any) of my projects stayed on schedule that well.

    Am I missing something?

Most of the cave divers of the 60's were recreational diving 72 tanks. Not the "elite" cave divers of yesterday that still cave dive today.

The Gainesville crowd have all the the prestige but they were not the only divers! Most cave divers were recreational divers just exploring.

Many of the these unknown recreational divers died: but not most. We went on to our families and careers..... The old time divers are not heroes, just ordinary people.

If the "old timers" commented on the other divers, many of whom died, I'd feel better. But I have never seen a comment from any of them. They seem to enjoy being quiet and enjoying their prestige.

    Would they like to respond?

    Hey, Richard!

The reason the site uses a bulletin board format is so anybody can add stuff. If you know anything about cave diving in the 60s, 70s, 80s or whenever, post it. If you know somebody that knows about anything, send them to the site.

I talked to Tex Chalkley Friday, and while he doesn't cave dive any more, he was at the workshop last week, so he is obviously still interested in cave diving. I hope he posts some of his experiences on CDH.
