Why there are multi levels in cave training:
For those who don't already know, I was the first NSS-CDS Training Chairman.
Up until the NSS-CDS started training, there was only one level of cave training. The worst part was that you couldn't even sign up for the course, unless you could show logged dives in a cave. You also had to *own* all your gear, pretty expensive as you all know.
A *lot* of guys were dying in caves, because they had no cave training at all. Sheck Exley came up with the idea of the Cavern course. The idea was to get OW divers the information they needed to stay alive, and then they could decide if they really wanted to become full cave divers.
After the first year of Cavern training, the manager of Ginnie asked the NSS-CDS to have a third level so single tank divers could go back to the Lips. That level was first called Basic, then changed to Intro.
The problem arose that when switching to doubles, a lot of students needed more time to finish "full" cave, so Apprentice was added. A lot of guys didn't go on to finish, so were considered "loose cannons", so the time limit was introduced.
It isn't so much that anyone "looks down" on Cavern through Apprentice, but even the casual observer has to admit that someone only partially trained isn't fully trained, and could be a hazard to themselves, or others.
The way I look at it is, anyone with less than "full" Cave is still learning, but like any student should be respected for going on with their training.
FWIW, I will dive with any level diver.
The sad part is, in spite of all that training, egos still get in the way, and some divers still think they are invulnerable. I really hate to see trained cave divers get into trouble. It makes me wonder if it was all worth it :smt086
I still agree with OFG-1, your *ONLY* reward is learning enough to stay alive.
