?? It's been a while (over a year) since I've been there, but I recall the area being a rock bottom. Regardless, if that plaque is missing it's a crime. I hope that if it's gone that the person who took it is big enough to return it.
I have found several of the CRJ (Chris Rouse Jr) clear red line arrows thru the system - they are nice touchstones to see during dives to some of the less traveled areas. At one time there were three, it may be down to two now. Kind of like the "Steve" arrows..
Some things need to be left alone.
Mark
If it's true that would be some serious bad JuJu that I wouldn't want following me around.Quote:

This memorial was put at their final resting place....It is their grave marker. I am placing an envelope on the counter at Cave East to replace the marker. I don't own a scooter or ever rode one, but I will swim it back there and replace it myself.
Chris
Are we sure that it's actually missing or just moved? Not that moving memorial is acceptable either. It's not like a rubber Godzilla doll and should be respected and left in place.
I've never been to the Hinkle or seen this marker. Is it something that would be easy to move? Tipped over and buried maybe?
Could the person who reported this have been mistaken?
Why would some sick jackass steal somethng like this? For a door stop?
It would seem that there are a few pretty seedy dirt bags who have taken a liking to our sport so I suppose thievery amongst our ranks is very possible. Sad but possible.
I hope it turns up.
That kind of stuff happens as soon as an activity is considered "cool" amongst a majority of people... Cavediving has been picked as that by the certification organizations... (I can't really call them "training organizations" anymore)Quote:

I was recently a loong way between two systems, in an area of cave that doesn't get dived too often. There was graffiti, drag marks and god knows what else incredibly deep into this system. it's just incredible what passes for acceptable - but it ain't going to change any time soon. There's very little that can be done to stop it.
Perhaps the agencies need to consider changing the classic WARNING signs. An added sign reminding people that they may NOT damage or remove anything inside a cave might be useful - those warning signs are ingrained in our brains, and perhaps such a second sign might remind people that it is completely unacceptable to alter the caves in any way.
With their ideas, you might as well carve it into the wall... :roll:Quote:

(This is in no way a post in support of some retard removing a plaque that has been in one of the caves for a long time.)
I was always surprised when i saw that plaque that it was so small, light and mostly just laying there. I've even showed it to a buddy of mine by handing it over (of course we replaced it), but it always left me wondering that it was only a matter of time untill somebody would kick it around or else.....
It would seem somebody needs to investigate this before everybody gets all tore up over something that is not substanciated as of yet.Quote:

True, but as I understand it, their "cremains" were released and/or left in the system and thus it is their final resting place and should be respected and treated as such.Quote:

Could someone please confirm if the monument has been moved? I plan on swimming back there one day to visit and I hope it is either still there or will be back soon.
Jordan,
I know we told you we could not find the plaque Saturday and it did not appear to be there. We made a confirmation dive with Evie, Bob, and Jeff covering most of the tunnels after the Hienkel. If the plaque is still there and has been moved they could not locate it. If it has indeed been removed from the cave all I can say is the divers who did it should realize they acted in poor judgment and should return it. It is the Rouse's grave marker and certainly in bad taste to disturb it. Hopefully it will re-appear. Chris & Chrisy are divers from my home area and several of us who knew them always visit the plaque for personal reasons every time we dive Ginnie.
I personally saw it there 3 weeks ago. Same spot as always.
I don't see how you can see anything after following you in a cave a couple of times...fwiw i just went back yesterday and took a look as well, it was not there...maybe it has been moved and not removed? I hate to think that there are grave robbers amongst those experienced enough to get to the henkle. billQuote:
