Wasn’t there a fatality in the search effort?
just to be clear, i remember when this first happened- is it believed that the diver actually got up, left his dog at home, drove to vortex, parked his truck, and vanished without a trace after all these years? No further contact with any friends or family? or is the body, where ever it is in the cave, simply not recoverable?
Yeah, in much private communication I had with the father after the fatality that happened there, with the thought the victim was searching for the body for reward money.
We may never know for sure what happened, but if someone found remains under a shifting pile of sand I wouldn't doubt it. I had one dive there that made me very cautious. A mound of sand shifted and had a sandvalanche, which wedge me. I dug, but every handful, was filled by more. Eventually I dug enough of a trench to get out. The joke has always this is a manmade cave cave, because of the dredging efforts to move the sand.
Unfortunately there hasn't been any closure on it, but the family was issued a death certificate in 2013. There are four theories as to what happened.
1. His body is still in the cave
2. He faked his own death
3. Diver drowned and was subsequently removed from the water
4. Foul play
If the corpse is still in the cave, it is under a ridiculous amount of sand. Most recovery divers consider idea this highly unlikely. With the amount of effort spent searching in a cave that takes ~45 minutes to dive, it's plausible that he faked his death. When I entertain the idea of faking my own death, a 'solo cave dive accident at night' seems to be a damn good way.
My vote is faked death

Closure? Sure, he's still gone.
He's in Argentina running a Ponzie scheme with Jimmy Hoffa.
Wasn't there some incident at Vortex where the owner or previous owner of vortex seriously jacked someone up and left them for dead near a gator area expecting them to die and get eaten, but then I think the man awoke and stumbled back and was hospitalized. then the entire incident just sort of went away. probably some legal team got paid $$ ,but anyway i heard bits and pieces of this happening there also.....
