Part of current decompression theory is that nitrogen bubbles can illicit an immune response which leads to inflammation which can lead to further blockage/increases risk of DCS as cells and antibodies attach to bubbles (oversimplified). Whether or not helium does this as well I can not answer.
Interestingly, the Spisni study (UTD's Ratio Deco vs Buhlmann) was measuring Cytokines (proteins used in signaling inflammation and an immune response). In fact, the success of one vs the other was determined by cytokine levels.
Obviously this is unique response based on the individual, and I'm guessing Buhlmann was the winner of that study since it is so prevalent as a deco model in computers but now I'm curious if anyone here has experienced inflammation after a deco dive, I would think an obvious place it would be noticed would be stuffy nose or increased breathing effort (my guess) ?? I have no deco experience but have not experienced such things post dive.
Thanks,
Tim
OMG!!! im a STROKE!!! for 43 years i have been using adjustable shoulder straps on my doubles rig with quick release buckles!!.... i have been using bungee wings for 25 years!!!!.... i dive in the ocean with a steel tank!!! without a drysuit!!! ..i have tank boots on my doubles!!.....my SPG is across my chest clipped to my right shoulder D ring for no hands viewing!!!...... if you ever see me coming...just shoot this STROKE in the head right away....lest i breed and make more little strokes.....
if i join....do i get a patch?
Stroke?!? Wish I was only just a stroke. I am also “farm animal stupid” for having my SPG hose go under my left should strap and clipped to my left chest D-ring so I could easly read it.
I wonder what GI3 would think of sidemount :rollguy
well....after reading George's article from the above post....i have concluded the only rational option is to sell all of my dive gear and never endanger anyone ever again.....look on the gear exchange forum for super deals coming your way.....
Who would buy your stroke-level gear, anyway? Might as well just burn it and save the next stroke the trouble. ;)
Buhlmann did "win" but that wasn't the reason you see it on dive computers. This study was performed and published in the last few years. However, my comment wasn't on the efficacy of one strategy vs the other or if the test was valid. My comment was merely that inflammation markers were actively being measured due to decompression stress of "non-bent" divers.
I haven't noticed any inflammation for sure, but I will say, anecdotally, I believe that sinus issues are commonly associated with longish high-PO2 exposures.
I wonder how many people actually know how the term stroke was coined or what it means.
