Servicing Regulators

Soo... I'd like to start servicing my own regulators. I'm not sure how to get from here to there so I'm hoping for some advice :smt001

I'm wanting to learn about my dive rite regs for now, since I have about 10 of them and they all need to be serviced. (mostly 2100s or earlier models)

I know there are specialized tools, and I'm happy to pick up what I need. I like tools so I'm looking forward to having new toys. It looks like you need to be blessed by someone to get a manual.

I've opened up a reg or two in my day, but never did any work on them, so I'd like a full walk through and would prefer some sort of official training/certification...

Best bet may be to take the HOG (Highly Optimized Gear) regulator servicing class (TDI) - get the Vance Harlow and Regulator Savvy books along with the tools that the course requires. You will be able to rebuild the HOG regs and I am sure transfer most of that knowledge and experience to service your Dive Rite regs.

That is great advice! Having someone to show you the little tricks involved with servicing regs is perfect. It's about the right amount of torque, the right amount of (christo)lube on the proper spots and not losing any small parts in the process- - or having leftovers...
The last act is the fine art of tuning the regs to perform properly for you.
It's a lot of fun and the more help you get initially, the less costly your path will become... :)

Good advice above, get the books.
Start looking around fleabay for a Magnehelic 1-3 inches of water range and also a good 0-200 psi range pressure gauge, you may want one that can do pressure and vacuum, but mine only does pressure, can be had for about $30-$50. I got a big Dwyer Spriahelic high accuracy gauge there for $30.00. These two devices will give you a head start that is above the basic tool kits. Tools can be had in various places at various price points. Some places sell complete kits for the Hog class. Also scubatools.com is good (pricey on some stuff, but nice stuff). If you look around you can get setup less that expensively than the ready to go kits.
If you are doing Dive Rites or Hogs you won't need any model/brand specific specialty tools like some other models.

I went by Dive Rite today and got info from them to get into a training they run on my regs. I couldn't find anything about it on their website but they were helpful in person. I think I'll start there since it covers most of the regs I have now.

I'll take a look at those books and start hunting down the tools

You don't get good at regs until you've built a hundred or so, and you don't stay good unless you do a hundred or so every year. But that's just my opinion - I could be wrong.

Actually, if you have a lot of regs and hate paying a chunk of change to get them serviced, I fully understand wanting to learn to do them yourself. But read my first sentence.

Sludge, your thoughts are why I recycle regs on Ebay. I can rebuild a Poseidon and or Scubapro on a given day with the manual in hand. Do I do it every other weekend? No I do not, so I acknowledge I am not an expert. Is it hard to service a Scuba first stage? No, not at all. Second stage, better know your procedures. I would rather use a reg for a few years, sell it and get a new one. Kinda like how cars used to be bought and sold. Some bought a new ride every year or two and took a hit on the trade. Others keep the car for 15 years and run up 250,000 miles. Who is the winner, both are for different reasons, as long as the car does not stop running at the bottom of a river crossing (unlikely, but an example of the difference in my analogy)

Define good. I have rebuilt several first stages and they work fine. After I was done I was surprised how easy it was.

There is an Apeks flash presentation floating around that you may want to take a look at. Dive Rite regulators are similar in design to Apeks so it is beneficial. Also there is a pretty active DIY forum on SB if you need some help. You probably have most of the tools you will need except for the pin spanner, picks, and torque wrench.

I highly recommend getting and reading Regulator Savvy. It is an amazing manual for anyone who wants to understand how and why regs work.

Frankly speaking, if I knew someone who did a great job with Apeks regs for a reasonable rate, I would not service the regs myself. It is not as easy and simple as some people say it is, there are actually quite few things that can go wrong and lots of stuff that can break or get lost in the process.
Just to give you a few examples, two years ago I partially stripped the chrome plating on two entire sets of 1st/2nd stages because the acid in the ultrasonic cleaner was a little bit too much. I've broken an Apeks housing , actually the plastic part the exhaust mushrooms sits in, after trying to work the mushroom back in.
I lost a little clear washer in the sink when I did my old Aqualung Legend, that spare part was a pain to buy.
And no, I don't have "two left hands", LOL. Stuff like that just happens, it's part of the learning experience.
Basically I would agree with what Russell says. If you have someone at hand who is good at it, maybe it's better to have them do it. Since I have nobody back here whom I trust, I'll keep servicing my own regs. I'm sure I'm doing a better job now than most of the shops I would have access to who have their trainees and part time employees tinker with the regs.

I tried to edit my post explaining why I do it myself and I got timed out. I am not going to rewrite it all but in short I was cheated once and received substandard service, so I lost faith in service technicians. I know that guys like you, Forrest, and DA Aquamaster (wherever he is) can do a much better job than me but you guys are not the average technician. As another poster mentioned the techs are the low men on the dive shop totem pole.

Thanks for all the advise everyone. I'm ordering books, tools, and classes. I figure whether or not I end up doing the work myself this will be a good experience.

I agree it's somewhere in-between. Not as easy as some make it out to be, not as difficult as others intimate. If you know a reliable technician and have $ to spare, save the headache. What you see on the web are oftentimes close-to-best-case scenarios. As in most DIY matters. Installing 3/4" hardwood floors in your living room in a weekend? Sure, if your living room is a nice rectangle, the substrate is level, and a whole of other factors that may be off are favorably aligned. Reality is more messy. The fun part begins when a turret retainer breaks (yes, you pulled on the torque wrench a tad too hard), the spring is bad (all the shimming won't increase IP sufficiently), etc. The two books mentioned are excellent (and worth reading just to understand how 1st and 2nd stage regs work) but they too fall short of conveying the headaches that lie ahead and the know-how needed to handle them.

Having said all of that, if you don't know a reliable technician (how to tell if your LDS has one is a story unto its own), and you're not too clumsy and mechanically disinclined, then I would recommend the DIY route. I've only begun servicing my own regs recently but barring the headaches, cost (with parts, time, etc. it's actually cheaper to have someone do it), time delay (I'm sure it takes me a lot longer than a competent tech), I do it because I know the end result meets the high quality control standards I set.

I've been recently researching and getting ready to purchase a doubles reg set. After talking with my local dive shop and trying to figure out a set that fits my student budget, we were unable to come to anything that would be close to the doubles reg set HOG offers.
I am leaning towards the HOG set because I would also like to service my own regs and it seems they have made that a very feasible thing to do. I'm pretty good with tools and working in things, in no way do I expect past experience to be sufficient to know what I'm doing with regs, however I hope it will help.
If I do go with the HOG regs, I would like to take the course but living in KY the nearest HOG dealer is 200+ miles away so I'm not sure how/where I could take the course. Does anyone know if it's maybe offered online? Or of there's someone close to central KY that teaches it?

I'm a distributor of Edge and HOG products outside the US and have setup some classes here in the US. If we can get 5 people together who are interested in taking a class, we can bring it to you. I am not sure how you can say this. I recently started a thread asking about how many regulators are necessary for cave diving, the consensus was 6 (give or take). At a dive shop the average rate is around $25 per stage plus parts. The parts on average will be around $20 for a first stage and $30 for a second stage. So to service one stage it is $50 for labor and $50 for parts. If you multiply this by 6 then you are looking at $300 parts and $300 labor.

As far as the tools go you could go as crazy as you want or as reasonable. Many tools a person usually has, such as wrenches and hex keys. Some regs such as Scubapro require special tools while others do not. For a regulator like an Apeks you really only need a hook spanner and a torque wrench additional. Many of the other tools are only necessary to save time and frustration.

As far as parts go, there are several threads on Scubaboard discussing parts. As far as second stages the seats are largely interchangeable and the o-rings standard so you could service a second stage using aftermarket parts for about $5 a stage or $30 for six regs. If you have first stages that can use aftermarket seats (such a SP MK-10) then you could service them for about $5 a stage also. However other makes would require factory service kits so you wouldn't save anything there.

So for six regs the saving on just one service is about $400.

There are some Hollis closeouts floating around where you can get a first and second for $200. You can buy parts from NESS.

I've been enjoying servicing & diving the vintage double hose aqualungs recently. The Mistral is dead simple, one "o" ring, a spring and a seat. Piece of cake.

Hollis is the tech line of Oceanic. I would think they would breath similarly but I have not used them.

Good points. I think partly the magnitude of savings is influenced by how frequently one dives. And how much time one has for servicing regs. I have found that there is a significant learning curve to becoming efficient at servicing regs and achieving the savings you mentioned. Attaining this know-how is time consuming, even with all the information floating around SB. Oftentimes the information is partial/incomplete. As a novice you don't know what you don't know, and find this out the hard way. Resulting in backtracking, ordering additional parts, time delays, etc. If one services regs once or twice a year, it will take a while before the benefits of practice, build-up of know-how kick in. So, in my case, and it'll differ for others, I justify servicing regs not by its cost savings but quality control. Although I'm slow, I know what I'm getting and that removes the uncertainty factor of sending to technician who may not be sufficiently competent or is sloppy due to workload.

The most expensive second stage parts kit I know of is $19 retail. Most second stage kits are around $6.

Oh, and I have over a thousand dollars' worth of regulator repair tools.

Don't forget the vise-grips, cold chisel, crowbar, and sledgehammer. There's another thousand dollars from Snap-On! Though I shouldn't tease them too much; I got a catalogue today of Japanese woodworking tools offering chisels that cost over $700.00 apiece. Needless to say I won't be buying one.

I've thought about doing my own regs, since I'm a dedicated DIY'er and hate to spend money. One of the ideas that I was raised with is that you don't spend money to hire something done that you could do yourself. But some things are best left to people who do enough to be good at it. Between Tracy and I we have 14 or 15 regs. I would never do enough of it to develop anything more than basic competence. Basic competence is fine when I'm painting my house, working on my tractor, or remodeling my bathroom. But for life support equipment I have higher expectations than I would ever be able to meet myself.

One of the things I've learned over the years is the difference between somebody who has basic competence at something and somebody who is truly expert, with the knowledge, skills, and judgment that comes from long experience. It's the latter guy that I want working on my caving regs. So I don't do them myself, and I don't have them done by a part-timer college kid at the LDS who learned how to rebuild regs six months ago and is still working toward his first dozen.

Over the last 10 years our dive gear work has migrated to Florida. Dive Outpost is our LDS, Wayne Schreiber does our regs, and Steve Gamble does our drysuits. The only thing I go to a dive shop in Vermont for is fills, VIP's, and hydros.

Well, Forrest upgraded our canister lights, but when you're looking from Vermont, Georgia and Florida are about the same place! :)

Here are the scuba-specific tools I carry in a tool bag. It's about $800. These are in addition to the wrenches, pliers, ratchets, sockets, screwdrivers, torque wrench, and other general tools that I also carry. But that's not including the stuff in my workshop in Georgia, such as two ultrasonic cleaners, bench vise, hammers (yes, some people don't rinse their gear and a hammer is needed) and duplicate tools that I occasionally use.

Pfft. I watched a youtube video and it said I only needed like 3 or 4 tools and some "grease". Maybe that was an s&m video.

Anyway, I've spied on this thread and find the two different camps on reg repair interesting. I like to save money, but I like to save it smartly. I know with all the regs between two of us I would save a ton of money, but I see it as a skill that anyone can learn but only years of experience can make you excel at it. I dont want to go into a cave and have to think about the service I just did. It would be different if I was rec diving.
I'm in the camp that I'm better off finding a tech I can trust and know is doing an excellent job. Unfortunately thats the hard part.

Since you've found a reliable technician to service your regs, that's a good. But your comment also shows a general misconception: that servicing regs require advanced competence, especially so since they are life support equipment. Serving regs is VERY straightforward. If you're good at DIY, you will find that regs are simple devices. If you had easy access to parts -- you will break a turret or two, mess up an HP seat causing IP creep and all you need is a new HP seat (not a whole new kit), extra shims, etc. -- it's as easy as can be. It'll just take 3-4 times longer per reg than a competent technician. Since you're not servicing a ton of them in a month, it's not a big deal. Also, keep in mind: your competent service technician may be going through stressful times (say divorce proceedings) and be distracted when he/she services your regs. Forgets to replace a worn dynamic o-ring, causing a leak while you're at turnaround pressure. If you service your own regs, you can also be distracted, for the same reasons. But it's clear who has the greater incentive not to err.

I am sorry but I meant to say $30 for a first and $20 for a second. What second stage kits cost $6? The Hog and Dive Rite kits cost more than that.

I am sure you do but you are a professional technician, are you not? How many tools are absolutely needed versus how many tools are needed to save time?

I did look at your bag of tools and many of them are specific to different regulators. For example the scuba tools scubapro tool. If a diver standardizes on a specific first stage and second stage then the specialized tools and parts become manageable. Also unless you buying crap off eBay your regulators should not be corroded to point of needing a hammer.

After a service you should not make challenging dives, most problems happen after a service and most service is done by "professionals". I don't mean any disrespect to Sludge and others that are actually professionals but most so-called "professionals" have only taken a half-day course whose only prerequisite is that a dive shop sponsors you. What magic makes a dive master or instructor candidate mechanically-inclined and able to fix regulators?

To be a Scubapro Tech I had to apprentice with a technician until I felt comfortable with regs. Then I went to a two-day, sixteen hour course that had an exit exam. Then I had to build thirty systems under the supervision of a Scubapro Pro-Tech. THEN I took another exam and I was certified.

You can punch seats for a few cents and the o-rings will cost you another few cents. (or flip the seat and reuse the static o-rings). However, don't most cave divers use balanced second stages?

Is your training typical of the industry or not? Does a SP dealer need to use a certified-tech to purchase parts and do warranty work? Don't manufactures also give short courses at Dema?

It's typical for Scubapro, but none of the other ones that "certified me" were anywhere near as elaborate. Usually they just saw that I was a Scubapro Pro-Tech and watched me disassemble/assemble one reg and gave me the diploma.

When you pass the training do they issue you a certification number?

I don't know if I've ever been given a certification number. I've never even seen my certificates because they get mailed to the shop...
