I'm looking to pickup a decent camera to use for both open water dives and also caves.
So just looking for different options of what others have used and like.
Also anyone use or try out the go-pro3 cams? If you get the housing they are good to 60m (197 feet)

Just got done using GoPro 3 (Black) on some cave dives. Also, used it to shoot open water snorkeling with my wife between cave dives.
Hero can shoot both HD video and stills at the same time. The new Hero 3 Black model seems to have much better low light level sensitivity than previous Heros.
In the cave, my helmet had two small Inova I-Torch backup lights as foreground lighting. Only other lighting was the diver's primary lights.

The Sony HDR AS10/15 out perform the hero 3 black in low light by quite a bit... but the form factor works for just about anything other than helmet mounting in underwater caves. I've been meaning to post a rather lengthy explanation as to why exactly that is, but I haven't gotten around to it.
I'm waiting on a print, so I decided to write up the explanation. See: http://www.cavediver.net/forum/showt...in-Cave-Diving.
There is an alternative to GoPro, that I purchased after looking around, decent and with Sony Exmor® sensor: http://www.actionpro.de/en/
Movie sample done by me below. Anyway, I noticed that after the upload on FB, even in 1080i, still quality of YouTube is far inferior then the original video as displayed on my screen.

Looks interesting. I was excited thinking you meant Exmor-R.Quote:

May I ask - What light are you using with the Sony? I am getting this camera and need a light as well. Considering the Sola 1200, but would love a less expensive option.Quote:

I've got several lights that cover 4 of the 5 items. Haven't found one that covers all 5. I'm working with lights in the 10-40 lumens/dollar range... so MUCH cheaper.
That's not a good comparison. First of all, it's against the Hero 2... not the best GoPro out. The SONY has had a major firmware update that has added an underwater mode for color correction. It's also almost entirely using ambient light, which isn't very cave'ish.Quote:

Anyone check out the new Go Pro Cam. the go pro black "+" edition?? wondering if this is better under low light conditions? Also the new sony is smaller than the previous model. Just curious if anyone had any comments on either the new go pro Black + edition or the new sony HDR/30 Model, (has the GPS/WIFI) and also 25% smaller.

The GoPro 3+ does have wifi. You can use the cell phone app to control it. Be aware that the new case is only 130' depth rather than the 200' of the prior model. Accessories from the 3 can be used on the 3+ but the new case will present problems in attaching the backs from those accessories. Until the supply channel catches up with 3+ specific accessories anyway. From reviews I have read, the 3+ does have better low light performance.
Given the aftermarket accessories available for the GoPro it is tough to recommend any other options.
I am considering the 3+ as well. I would love to see some sample video in a cave if anyone has one.
